How to Enable FaceTime Video Chat on iPhone 3GS?

Hello there, I just got my first iPhone. It’s a 3GS and running on a jailbroken iOS 4.1 firmware. Anyway, I just want to know if I will be able to download and install Facetime into my device.

Asked by: Eric from Kansas City, Missouri

Hello Eric, unfortunately, I assumed that Apple decided not to add Facetime video chat to iPhone 3GS due to the fact that iPhone 3GS doesn’t have a front facing camera which is needed to make a video call. Basically, the FaceTime app were specifically designed for the iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4G.

Anyway, since you are on iOS 4.1, you can download and install an app called FaceIt-3GS via Cydia Store. With FaceIt-3GS, you will be able to receive FaceTime video calls from iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4G, or Mac OS X users. And since you don’t have a front-facing camera, you can only use the app in order to view someone else’s FaceTime video and not for sending video stream. You can follow the step by step guide posted below on how to install FaceIt-3GS on iPhone 3GS.

Step 1: Launch Cydia app form the SpringBoard of your jailbroken iPhone 3GS.
Step 2: Then tap to select the Manage tab at the bottom of the screen and select the Sources button.
Step 3: Then tap on the Edit button at the top right of the screen.
Step 4: To add new Cydia repository you have to tap on the Add button at the top left of the screen.
Step 5: Then enter url and press the Add Source button.
Step 6: Once you have successfully added the repo, you have to tap on the Return to Cydia button.
Step 7: Then at the top of the screen you have to tap on the Done button.
Step 8: From the list of user added repositories, tap on the added and search for FaceIt-3GS and install it
Step 9: Once the installation completed, tap on the large Restart Springboard button.

That’s it! You have successfully activated FaceTime on your jailbroken iPhone 3GS. Otherwise, you can install Skype.
