Steve Jobs Was Open to The iPad Mini Concept

Despite his public denial of an iPad Mini Steve Jobs liked the idea of a smaller tablet, an email signed by an Apple senior executive revealed on Friday, reaffirming earlier rumors about the iPad Mini entering into production.

The email was presented as evidence by Samsung Electronics during the trial of the century between Apple and the South Korean manufacturer.

There will be a 7-inch market and we should do one. I expressed this to Steve several times since Thanksgiving and he seemed very receptive the last time. I found email, books, Facebook, and video very compelling on a 7-inch. Web browsing is definitely the weakest point, but still usable," Apple Vice President Eddy Cue wrote to chief operating officer Tim Cook in an email.

During his interviews Steve Jobs emphasized the need for a 9.7-inch display: there are clear limits on how close you can physically place elements on a touch screen before users cannot reliably tap, flick or pinch them.” But if you browse thought the developer’s library, you’ll find the same information in technical terms, described under the iOS Human Interface Guidelines.

Right now Apple is the global leader in tablet sales and tablet web usage despite its competitor’s efforts to push back the iPad. However, the market is set to change with new players entering the scene: Google Nexus 7 was introduced recently, and the reviews are mostly positive. Their message: Nexus 7 is a good 7-inch alternative if you are not after the iPad.

Microsoft will launch its Surface tablet as early as the end of October, which is set to change the looks of tablet dominance in the near future. It remains to be seen whether Microsoft can redraw the tablet market. Surface is among the most hyped tablets, but there is no price information as this moment.

Amazon is also set to compete directly with Apple with its revamped Kindle Fire models. Industry sources report that the online retail giant is working on six separate tablets and among them is a 10-inch model. In terms of marketing strategy and content Kindle Fire is a good competitor of the iPad, yet in the end the users will decide their favorite device based on many factors.
