Download Redsn0w 0.9.9b3 to Jailbreak iOS 5 GM on iPhone, iPad & iPod Touch [How-to Guide]

As you already know, Apple has already seeded the latest (and mostly likely the last) pre-release build of the iOS 5, known as the Gold Master build. As per usual, the update is only available for those who have enrolled an account over at Apple's iOS Dev Center but we are sure that the resourceful types will be able to get their hands on the iOS 5 GM IPSW with ease. Anyway, if you are planning to jailbreak the iOS 5 GM build, then as usual you can trust that the iPhone Dev Team is already on the case. Yes, you can use the latest version of Redsn0w to jailbreak iOS 5 GM.

Redsn0w 0.9.9b3
This news was brought into our attention by no other than the iPhone Dev Team's frontman MuscleNerd. It has been confirmed that the latest version of Redsn0w (0.9.9b3) can be used to jailbreak iOS 5 GM, although as expected, it is a tethered jailbreak. This basically means each time the device powers down or reboots, you will be required to plug your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch into the computer and in order to boot it into the jailbroken state.

One awesome feature of the latest Redsn0w version is that it allows auto-detection of the IPSW which means that you do not have to keep those bulky IPSW files since Redsn0w automatically detects what firmware version your device is running. And that makes Redsn0w even more easy to use. And now we're pleased to tell you that IPSW auto detection is supported with iOS 5 GM.

NOTE: Redsn0w (0.9.9b3) works on all devices except for the iPad 2.

Steps to Jailbreak iOS 5 GM into Your iDevice Using Redsn0w 0.9.9b3:

  1. Update or restore to the GM build of the iOS 5 which is available through the iOS Dev Center (or through file sharing websites which we will not link here).
  2. Now proceed to download the latest Redsn0w version, Redsn0w 0.9.9b3 for Windows or Redsn0w 0.9.9b3 for Mac.
  3. Now launch Redsn0w 0.9.9b3. You should see two buttons on the main interface: Jailbreak and Extras. To initiate the jailbreak, simply press the Jailbreak button and you will be prompted to place your device into DFU Mode. Just follow the onscreen instruction on how to put your device into DFU.

  5. And that's pretty much it. The jailbreak tool will take care of the rest so just sit back and relax. Again, this is a TETHERED jailbreak so each time your device shuts down or reboots, you will need to run it by Redsn0w by selecting the "Just Boot" button under Extras.

Again, may we remind you that the commercial version of the iOS 5 will be shipping in just a matter of a week, so it is up to you if you actually want to jailbreak iOS 5 GM into your device. For all you know, the hackers will be able to swiftly come up with an untethered jailbreak once the commercial build becomes available. But then again, the iOS 5 GM should be pretty much similar to the final build, so it is a great way for any user to experience iOS 5 a week early.

Until a low-level bootrom exploit is out for the A5 processors / reliable Redsn0w compatible JB is out. No ETAs on whatsoever so don’t bother asking.
