I am completely noob about jailbreaking an iPhone. I have an iPhone 4 which was recently updated to iOS 4.3.4. I am planning to jailbreak it to get a tethered jailbreak. Honestly, I am not really familiar about tethered and untethered jailbreak for iPhone. Can anyone please tell me the difference? And how to get untethered jailbreak? Thanks.

Basically, tethered jailbreak means you cannot boot (turn on the iPhone) without connecting it to a computer. Yes, this is quite frustrating as you have to connect (tether) your iPhone into your Mac or PC every time your iPhone or other iOS device reboots or the battery dies. For instance, if you jailbroke your iPhone using the tethered jailbreak version of Redsn0w, then you have to do the following in order to boot your device into tethered jailbreak state:
- Connect your iPhone (iPod Touch or iPad) to your computer
- Re-launch the same Redsn0w jailbreak tool that you used to jailbreak the device
- Select the “Just boot tethered right now” option (shown in the screenshot above).
- The jailbroken hardware will now boot with the aid of redsn0w
Untethered jailbreak means the iPhone or other iOS device is independent of computer, and it can boot all by itself without the help of the computer. Obviously, untethered jailbreak is the preferential jailbreak method. Additionally, untethered jailbreak is much stable in comparison to tethered, due to the fact that the tethered ones come first, then followed by the untethered.
