Upgrade iPhone 4 to iOS 5 Firmware Without Losing Current Jailbreak
Hello guys, I have a jailbroken factory unlocked iPhone 4 running on iOS 4.2.1. I am currently residing here in Japan and am using SoftBank’s SIM card. What I want to do is upgrade my jailbroken iPhone 4 to iOS 5 without losing its current jailbreak. Is this possible? Thanks in advance! I appreciate your expertise in this. All the best.

Hello Allan, yes, you will be able to restore your iOS 5 beta 3
firmware on your device and then jailbreak it using the new Redsn0w
0.9.8b2 or Sn0wbreeze
2.8b4 jailbreaking tools. However, note that iOS 5 beta 3 is not available for public download and this version of iPhone firmware is intended for iOS (app) developers who are currently enrolled at Apple’s Developer Center. But if you really want to upgrade your iPhone to iOS 5, then you should check this blog post
to know more about iOS 5 beta 3. You can also Google some leaked iOS 5 beta 3 download links. In your case, since you are using a factory unlocked iPhone, I would recommend you to use Redsn0w 0.9.8b2
to jailbreak iOS 5 beta 3 as this tool doesn’t require you to create a custom pre-jailbroken iOS 5 beta 3 IPSW file and preserve the unlockable baseband of your iPhone. The step by step guide on how to use Redsn0w 0.9.8b2 can be found here
. But before you jailbreak or restore your deice, you should backup your SHSH Blobs first using iFaith
, as well as backup your jailbreak apps using AptBackup or PkgBackup.
As soon as iOS 5 public release is available, we will post the updates and new tutorial on our main blog. Just make sure you that you are subscribed to our RSS feed, Twitter, or like our Facebook Fanpage.
