Is it Possible to Unlock iPhone 3GS Baseband 5.16.02 on iOS 4.1?

Hello everyone, I just bought a used iPhone 3GS. It has iOS 4.1 firmware installed with 05.16.02 baseband. Anyway, I am thinking to jailbreak and unlock this phone and use it over T-Mobile SIM card or other international carrier. Is there any way to unlock the device? Cheers.

Hello Mack, jailbreaking and unlocking your iPhone 3GS on iOS 4.1 is possible. However, you should be noted that this is not just a simple jailbreaking process due to the fact that you have to update the baseband version of your device to iPad 6.15.00 baseband. You don’t have to worry because this process in not that too complicated. But since this baseband is not intended for iPhones, there are few consequences once you update the baseband of your device to iPad baseband, and this includes losing the GPS functionality of your iPhone (There’s no fix yet for this bug), you will not be able to restore your iPhone to stock iPhone firmware (You will need to create a custom firmware using either PwnageTool or Sn0wbreeze), and there’s no way you can upgrade pr downgrade the baseband of your device. Meaning, you will void the warranty of your iPhone once you jailbreak and update the baseband of your device as there’s no hiding the baseband version from Apple.

Anyway, you can follow this tutorial on how to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1/4.1 on your iPhone 3GS as well as update the baseband of your device to 6.15.00. Once completely jailbroken with iPad baseband, you can now unlock your device form its carrier using Ultrasn0w 1.2.3. The step by step guide on how to use Ultrasn0w can be found here.
