Can I Use Redsn0w 0.9.6RC15 to Jailbreak iPhone 3GS on iOS 4.2.1?
Hi guys, my daughter convinced me to jailbreak my iPhone 3GS. She is using a jailbroken iPhone 4 which she got from eBay couple of months ago. Anyway, my iPhone 3GS have iOS 4.2.1 firmware installed, and I already downloaded Redsn0w 0.96RC15 for my PC. However, the blog said that Redsn0w 0.96RC15 is for iOS 4.3.3, so can I use this Redsn0w to jailbreak my device? Thanks.

Hello Dexter, no, you will not be able to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS using Redsn0w 0.9.6RC15
due to the fact that your iPhone is running on unsupported firmware. Redsn0w 0.9.6RC15 was released and intended only to jailbreak iPhone 4 (GSM and CDMA), iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 4G, iPod Touch 3G, and iPad 1 running on iOS 4.3.3 firmware. In your case, you can use Redsn0w 0.9.6RC8 to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1. You can download the Windows version of Redsn0w 0.9.6RC8 from here
(or using this link
for Mac OS X users). Then check out this blog post
for the detailed step by step guide on how to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 on iPhone 3GS using Redns0w 0.9.6RC8. However, it is worth noting here that this version of Redsn0w offers tethered jailbreak only on iOS 4.2.1, which means you have to connect your device to your PC in order to boot it or power it on. Anyway, to get untethered iOS 4.2.1 Jailbreak, then you should jailbreak your iPhone 3GS using Greenpois0n
RC6. You can get the untethered version of Greenpois0n RC6 from here
and the step by step guide on how to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 on iPhone using Greenposis0n can be found on this blog post
