iTunes Error 20 While Restoring iOS 5 Custom Firmware on iPhone 4

Hi Jaxov team! Few days ago, I installed OpenSSH app through Cydia to customize my iPhone by installing some .DEB files from my PC. Due to inexperience, I messed up with my phone and in result, some of the iOS apps got unresponsive. Since I am using an unlocked iPhone, I created a custom firmware using Sn0wbreeze 2.8b8. But I am getting iTunes error 20 everytime I try to restore the iOS 5 custom .IPSW file. Can anyone help me to solve this without losing my unlock? Thanks.

Hello Matthew! Have you tried to put your iPhone in Pwned DFU state when restoring the custom firmware? Also, make sure that you are using iTunes 10.5. Anyway, to fix this iTunes error, I would recommend you to use the newly released Redsn0w 0.9.9b8 to create custom firmware. You can check this blog post to download and know more about Redsn0w 0.9.9b8.

Step 1: Remove your SIM card (yes, your micro or cut SIM card) and then connect your iPhone into your computer.

Step 2: Download the stock iOS 5 firmware for your iPhone 4 using this link.

Step 3: Launch the downloaded Redsn0w 0.9.9b8, click on the "Extras" from the main menu and click on the "Custom IPSW" option.

Step 4: Once done, under Extras option, click the "Pwned DFU" option to put your iPhone in Pwned DFU state.

Step 5: Then once in Pwned DFU mode, just launch iTunes 10.5 and then restore your iPhone.

  • Hold down the OPTION button then click on “Restore”, locate the custom IPSW file.

Step 6: Wait for iTunes to restore the custom iOS 5 firmware. Once completely restored, your jailbroken iOS device will automatically restart and since you don’t have a SIM card on your device iTunes will prompt you that your device is not activated.

Step 7: To activate, just simply disconnect your phone, then insert your AT&T SIM card (or any SIM card to which your iPhone is locked to) and then connect it back to your computer.

Step 8: Activate your iPhone through iTunes or with SAM if you don’t the official SIM card of your device.

That’s it! You can now unlock your iPhone using Gevey SIM by following this tutorial.
