You can unlock and Jailbreak your iPhone 3GS with this custom IPSW while preserving your baseband.

This tutorial is about unlocking iPhone 3GS on Firmware 3.1 via Ultrasn0w. Please note that this post is for those users who are on jailbroken firmware 3.0 or 3.0.1. Those of you who have upgraded to firmware 3.1 from iTunes but have saved your SHSH file to Cydia, you can still unlock/jailbreak but first you will have to downgrade your firmware back to 3.0 or 3.0.1. Finally a good news for iPhone 3GS users! Jailbreak of iPhone 3GS on Firmware 3.1 is possible now. Here is step wise procedure to jailbreak iPhone 3GS running on Firmware 3.1 with PwnageTool 3.1.3. This version of PwnageTool is for those who are on jailbroken firmware 3.0 or 3.0.1, this new version of PwnageTool enables us to update to firmware 3.1 without altering baseband of your iPhone, those of you who have upgraded to firmware 3.1 from iTunes but have saved your SHSH file to Cydia, you can still unlock/jailbreak but first you will have to downgrade your firmware back to 3.0 or 3.0.1. Dev-Team just announced that it has finally managed to Jailbreak/Unlock iPhone 3GS on Firmware 3.1. Dev-Team unveiled this information on their website and twitter status. Their recent tweets about subject are as follows:

Many users faced problems in unlocking their iPhone 3G with firmware 3.1. In order to unlock your iPhone 3G through Ultrasn0w you should have baseband version 04.26.08. If you have baseband version 05.11.07 then you won’t be able to unlock your iPhone 3G with firmware 3.1 as this version of baseband doesn’t allow your iPhone 3G from getting unlocked via Ultrasn0w. Good news you can still unlock your iPhone 3G through Ultrasn0w but before that you have to downgrade your baseband firmware from 05.11.07 to 04.26.08.

This tutorial is about unlocking iPhone 3G firmware 3.1 via Ultrasn0w. iPhone 2G users can unlock and jailbreak their iPhone using PwnageTool here. As far as iPhone 3G users are concerned, they are requested to wait until Dev-Team releases a new version of Ultrasn0w to unlock iPhone 3GS.

For all those who are interested to update their iPhone firmware to 3.1, they are requested to wait until Dave-Team releases a Redsn0w and Ultrasn0w which can actually unlock firmware 3.1. If you will upgrade to firmware 3.1 now then you will lose your Ultrasnow unlock forever. You wont be able to recover your baseband firmware. Up-till now feel free to unlock iPhone OS 3.0.1 Firmware which is compatible with Redsnow.

At last, after a two day wait, the iPhone Dev Team has finally managed to crack open the iPhone firmware 3.0 and has now released the PwnageTool to Jailbreak and Unlock the iPhone and iPod Touch.
Sadly, iPhone 3G users will still have to wait till Ultrasnow is pushed to the Cydia repo so until now only iPhone 2G users will be able to Jailbreak and Unlock their device on the iPhone firmware 3.0. Also the Pwnage Tool can be used by 1st Gen iPod Touch to Jailbreak the device.
