Nokia Siemens Networks today launched their downlink Dual Carrier EDGE software solution, ushering the first steps of EDGE Evolution into Nokia Siemens Networks’ GSM/EDGE radio portfolio. This solution offers double data speeds of up to 592 kbps to existing EDGE-capable GSM networks, thus enabling a mobile broadband experience, such as maintaining relationships in virtual societies, posting video clips to blogs in real time or streaming the latest news in mobile TV.

Nokia Siemens Networks’ Dual Carrier EDGE solution, which will be available as a software upgrade from Q3 2008 onwards is the first step in evolving EDGE. As a strong innovator of EDGE Evolution, Nokia Siemens Networks already has additional plans to introduce in its networks the next substantial step, the so called EGPRS 2, to further boost end user experience in up- and downlink performance. This will result in downlink speeds of up to 1.2 Mbps and will double uplink speed to up to 473 kbps, thus quadrupling the capabilities of EDGE today. EDGE Evolution is based on the 3GPP release 7 standard.

“By 2015, we expect to live in a broadband-IP world with five billion people ‘always on’ and therefore Nokia Siemens Networks is committed to protecting customer investments and continue to implement leading EDGE technology. Dual Carrier software upgrade is an easy and extremely cost efficient step to bring broadband user experience to GSM/EDGE networks”, says Ari Lehtoranta, Head of Radio Access Business Unit, Nokia Siemens Networks.

Operators can serve their customers even better using the Dual Carrier solution as the demand for data services and connectivity is immense , proven by the steep increase on data services consumption in 3G/HSPA networks today. With this solution, 3G/HSPA operators can offer service continuity for their 3G services.

Nokia Siemens Networks GSM/EDGE BSS is operational in 260 operator networks in 117 countries offering services to more than 1.5B subscribers. Nokia Siemens Networks is the indisputable no. 1 in EDGE with 125 public EDGE references.

At CTIA Wireless 2009, the Nokia Siemens Networks Flexi Multiradio Base Station was selected by a panel of judges as the first place winner of the 4th Annual CTIA Emerging Technology Award in the Green Network Hardware and Infrastructure category. The annual E-Tech Award recognizes the newest and most innovative wireless products and applications in the areas of consumer, enterprise and network technology. The company also received second place in the Wide Area Network category for the same product.

The Nokia Siemens Networks Flexi Multiradio Base Station takes green to the extreme and makes the evolution path from 2G to 3G all the way to LTE more cost-effective than ever, helping operators significantly reduce operating and capital expenses and energy consumption throughout the network. Building on the company’s Flexi Base Station platform, the software definable Flexi Multiradio expands its supported technologies to cover GSM/EDGE, WCDMA/HSPA/HSPA+ and LTE – all running concurrently in a single unit, eliminating the need for deploying all new equipment with each network evolution.

“When 80 to 90 percent of a mobile operator’s energy is used by their network, we have to take drastic measures to decrease the energy consumption as much as possible,” said Anne Larilahti, Head of Environmentally Sustainable Business, Nokia Siemens Networks. “Nokia Siemens Networks continues to change the game with our award-winning Flexi platform and we are pleased that we are receiving this validation all around the world.”

“We thank CTIA for adding the Green category to this year’s line-up of awards, calling attention to the importance of this issue for our entire industry,” said Larilahti.

Built with over 90 percent materials, the Flexi Multiradio Base Station compared to conventional base stations is only 20 percent of the size and weight of a conventional base station, and it delivers an additional 40 percent in energy savings on top of the previous Flexi platform’s 70 percent reduction in power consumption. The power consumption of a typical three-sector base station site running GSM/EDGE and WCDMA/HSPA or LTE simultaneously is about 790W – the equivalent of a small kitchen appliance – and pushes an impressive 60W output per sector for maximum capacity and coverage.

The CTIA Emerging Technology Awards program is designed to give industry recognition and exposure to the best wireless products and services in the areas of mobile consumer electronics and applications; enterprise and vertical market technology; 4G and network infrastructure; and environmentally friendly hardware and services. Nearly 300 applications were submitted in 18 categories and reviewed by a panel of 30 recognized members of the media, industry analysts and executives. Products were judged on innovation, functionality, technological importance, implementation and overall “wow” factor.
