Official update from iPhone Dev Team:

If you've updated to 4.1beta2 on iPhone3G or iPod2G(non-MC), you can use this redsn0w from June to jailbreak. Just point it at the 4.0 IPSW (the public one, not the developer GM one).

(Yes – point it at the 4.0 IPSW even though you're at 4.1beta2).

Don't do this if you need the ultrasn0w carrier unlock!!

Note 1: This won't hacktivate your iPhone3G – but for those with legit access to the 4.1beta2 this shouldn't matter. Please don't pirate Apple software

Note 2: If you're at 4.1beta2 you'll probably experience network problems after jailbreaking. Until a new version of redsn0w is released, you may need to rely on afc2 access (such as FunBox-like file browser programs) to manipulate your filesystem.

Note 3: This is recommended only for power users who can deal with the problems that will pop up as the JB apps fall further behind the beta firmwares.

The procedure for jailbreaking iOS 4.1 Beta 2 with Redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5 is exactly similar to the procedure for jailbreaking iOS 4.1 Beta 1. Just restore your iPhone / iPod Touch to iOS 4.1 Beta 2 with iTunes and point Redsn0w at iOS 4.0 IPSW (final release, not the GM one). You can follow this step-by-step guide for jailbreaking iOS 4.0.1 Beta 2 with Redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5. Remember that this jailbreak will not hactivate your iPhone, moreover you might experience network problems after the jailbreak.

If DFU mode also fails, try Recboot, its an alternative to EasyiRecovery and also fixes the iTunes 1015 error during custom IPSW restore process.

Above video clearly explain what's happening with iPhone 3G with iOS 4. I myself own an iPhone 3G and I faced numerous problems like slowness, apps crash, phone restarting, less battery backup, unresponsive controls etc after updating to iOS 4. Finally I had to downgrade my iPhone 3G to iOS 3.1.2 and it's working fine now.

Solutions / Remedies?

First of all, if you have an iPhone 3G and you are planning to update iOS 4 on it then please do yourself a favor and save the time you would be wasting to make iOS 4 perform well on your iPhone, by NOT updating iOS 4 on your iPhone 3G. Updating iOS 4 on iPhone 3G isn't really worthy! Only new features along with numerous minor improvements you get are Folders and Improved Mailbox. Multitasking as we all know is included in the package for iPhone 3G.

If you already have updated iOS 4 on your iPhone 3G then you may try few things before downgrading OS of your phone. Hard reset your iPhone 3G couple of times, turn all unnecessary settings off, uninstall unnecessary Cydia tweaks/apps. If you are still facing problems after trying these workarounds then proceed with following guides to downgrade firmware of your iPhone 3G.

Downgrade to OS 3.1.3 / OS 3.1.2

You may downgrade your iPhone 3G to OS 3.1.3 or OS 3.1.2, there isn't much difference other than few minor bug fixes in OS 3.1.3. I downgraded my iPhone 3G to OS 3.1.2. Step by step procedure for downgrading to OS 3.1.3 is given here, and here for OS 3.1.2.

Cydia SHSH Blobs Saved
iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 users are always requested to save their SHSH blobs in all cases. For those who don't know: Apple introduced the concept of ECID (Exclusive Chip ID) in iPhone 3GS which is used to generate the SHSH blobs of your device which iTunes check every time you downgrade your firmware from newer to older version of firmware. Whenever a new firmware is released, Apple stops signing the old firmware, hence preventing you from downgrading your iPhone firmware to the older version.

iPhone 3G SHSH Blobs

Before iOS 4.0, only iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 users were required to save their SHSH blobs but now Apple has introduced a new soft SHSH blobs check in iOS 4 which prevents iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G from downgrading their firmware to older versions. As this SHSH blobs check is not present in iPhone OS 3.x.x, so you can easily downgrade to iPhone OS 3.x.x from any firmware version without SHSH blobs. How to Jailbreak iOS 4.0.1 on iPhone 3G with Redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5

  1. *Download iTunes 9.2.
  2. *Download Redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5
  3. *Download both iOS 4.0 and iOS 4.0.1.
  4. Restore iOS 4.0.1 IPSW using iTunes 9.2 to your iPhone 3G. Don't worry, it wont upgrade your baseband from 05.13.04. You will still be able to unlock it using Ultrasn0w.
  5. Once iOS 4.0.1 is successfully restored on your iPhone 3G, run Redsn0w and click on the "Browse" button. Select iOS 4.0 (NOT iOS 4.0.1) file you downloaded in step 3.

    6. Redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5

  6. Check "Cydia" and click on the next button.

  7. Check Enable Multitasking and Wallpaper. Please note that this step is optional, if you don't want to use these options, simply uncheck them.

For that you will need to quickly hold "Power" button , after holding the "Power" button for 3 seconds, you will now have to hold "Home" button for 10 seconds.
