This post is about Unlocking iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS firmware 3.1.2 via Ultrasn0w. iPhone 2G users can unlock and jailbreak their iPhone using PwnageTool here.

iPhone Dev-Team has come up with updated PwnageTool 3.1.4 for MAC for recent firmware 3.1.2. Latest PwnageTool 3.1.4 can be used to jailbreak the original iPhone (Edge), iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch (1G and 2G) running on firmware 3.1.2. Custom .ipsw firmware files created by PwnageTool would upgrade your iPhone to firmware 3.1.2 without actually updating baseband of your phone, which is required to unlock your phone and run it on any carrier SIM.

We already mentioned in our 3.1.2 Firmware Jailbreak post that blackra1n is a software which can only jailbreak iPhone 2G,3G,3GS and iPod Touch, it can’t be used for unlocking. Dev-Team has also released an official statement regarding this stating:
Update: Geohot released a Windows jailbreak called “blackra1n” which is similar to redsn0w in that it covers multiple devices (and it covers beyond just firmware 3.0.1 where redsn0w currently stops). blackra1n is not a carrier unlock. You must always avoid updating your baseband to maintain your unlockability. If you use blackra1n to jailbreak 3.1 or 3.1.2, the steps you take before running blackra1n will prevent the unlock from working on your iPhone for potentially a very long time.

iPhone Dev-Team hasn’t been able to come up with jailbreak of 3.1.2 Firmware, but GeoHotz has! GeoHotz was the first to jailbreak iPhone and then iPhone 3GS this year, they have done it again, GeoHotz has just launched jailbreak of firmware 3.1.2 for iPhone 2G,3G,3GS and iPod Touch, jailbreaking would be carried out with new tool called “blackra1n”.
