One of the worst things that can happen to mobile phone owners is bill shock from going over their monthly data limits. With “unlimited” data plans well on its way to being a thing of the past, this is sadly a normal occurrence nowadays. With iOS 9, many users have reported that their cellular data usage have spiked. If this is happening to you, we have some tips that will help you reduce high cellular data usage on iOS 9.
Disable Cellular Data Usage for iCloud
If you are frequently using iCloud to transfer files between iDevices, then you could end up having high cellular data usage. This is especially true if you have enabled Cellular Data Usage for iCloud which uses cellular connection whenever a Wi-Fi connection is not available. To disable this feature go to Settings > iCloud > iCloud Drive > scroll down and turn off Use Cellular Data.
Disable Wi-Fi Assist
Wi-Fi Assist is a feature that will automatically use cellular data whenever a Wi-Fi connection is not available. Needless to say, this feature can wreak havoc on your monthly data allotment when left unattended. We recommend that you turn Wi-Fi Assist off by navigating to Settings > Cellular > scroll down and turn off Wi-Fi Assist.
Disable Background App Refresh
Here’s a very well-known tip to save on cellular data. When Background App Refresh is enabled, apps will update in the background for new information. We recommend that you disable this feature except for some apps that truly need it. To disable Background App Refresh, go to Settings > General > tap Background App Refresh > disable the Background App Refresh toggle.
Disable Automatic Downloads on Cellular Data
As a rule of thumb, we suggest that you disable automatic app updates altogether. App updates are some of the biggest downloads on your iPhone. Not all of your apps need to be always up-to-date, especially the ones you hardly use or those you installed on a whim. With that said, you should turn off “Use Cellular Data” on automatic downloads. To do this, go to Settings > App and iTunes Stores > disable the option Use Cellular Data.
Stop Streaming High Quality Music
Apple has provided the option to stream high quality music using Apple Music. You can use Cellular Data to stream high quality music but of course, it will consume a good deal of data as well. You can opt to disable the “High Quality on Cellular” option. Do this by navigating to Settings > Music > disable High Quality on Cellular. Alternatively, you can just disable Use Cellular Data from the same page so will only stream Apple Music when connected to Wi-Fi.
Avoid Using Cellular Data Altogether
This is sort of like your Last Resort. If you are already close to going over your monthly data allocation, then you could just disable Cellular Data altogether. Go to Settings > Cellular and disable Cellular Data. Just keep in mind that some apps won’t work properly without cellular data.
