iPhone 6 VS. iPhone 6S: Should You Upgrade or Not?

Apple has finally lifted the curtain for its latest and greatest flagship smartphone, the iPhone 6S and its larger variant the 6S Plus. For some people getting the iPhone 6S is a no-brainer while there are those who are still thinking it over if their old iPhone is already due for an upgrade. Perhaps the one who will be having a tough time are the owners of iPhone 6 with the question: should I upgrade? We’ve crunched through the specs so you don’t have to.

iPhone 6 VS. iPhone 6S

YES: The iPhone 6 is officially outdated

The iPhone 6S is the latest and greatest iPhone and is now the best iPhone that money can buy. The iPhone 6 is officially old news. For some people, the availability of iPhone 6S is reason enough to sell their iPhone 6 on eBay. As long as the phone is faster and has a better camera, it’s good enough for an upgrade.

NO: It’s an ‘S’ update

iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus
Since the iPhone 4, Apple has been churning out iterative updates for its flagship smartphones like the iPhone 4s, iPhone 5S and now, the iPhone 6S. The thing with the ‘S’ updates is that instead of introducing new things or reinventing things, they refine the good about its predecessors. The iPhone 6S is no different. Both the 6S and 6S Plus have the same screen sizes and the same aluminium body (albeit stronger).

YES: 3D Touch is awesome

iPhone 6S 3D Touch Feature
One of the main highlights of the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus is the 3D Touch feature. This feature will introduce new ways to interact with apps and will surely improve overall user experience. Basically, you can simply hold an app icon and you will access to shortcuts without needing to tap the app. For example, pressing the Safari icon will bring up shortcuts like New Tab, Show Bookmarks and Show Reading List. It will be exciting to see what sort of magic Apple developers can do with 3D Touch.

YES: The 12MP camera

The iPhone camera will finally get a significant resolution bump with the 6S and 6S Plus, since the 4s in 2011. The 6S and 6S Plus will both have a 12MP camera sensor. According to Apple, the new camera will have “truer colors and sharper, more detailed photos” which we are inclined to believe since the iPhone has always been an excellent camera phone.

NO: Still 16GB storage for the base model

Before the announcement, people have been hoping that Apple will at least bump the base iPhone 6S model to at least 32GB. Much to their dismay, the iPhone 6S still comes with 16GB storage. With the new 12MP camera, 4K video recording and the ever-growing sizes of apps, 16GB simply isn’t enough these days. If you want higher storage, you need to shell out for the 64GB or 128GB model. For comparison, both the LG G4 and Samsung Galaxy S6 have 32GB base models.

YES: It will even be much faster

iPhone 6S A9 GPU
The iPhone has always been a performance powerhouse and the iPhone 6S is no exception. The iPhone 6 is by no means a slow device but the iPhone 6S’s A9 chip will even be faster. Apple claims that the A9 chip will be 70% faster than the iPhone 6’s A8. The chip also comes with the M9 motion compressor built-in that will come in tracking functionalities.

NO: It will have a smaller battery

iPhone 6S Battery
The iPhone 6’s has a 1810 mAH battery. On the other hand, the iPhone 6S’s has a 1715 mAH battery. Despite all the added features like 3D Touch and 4K video, Apple claims that the iPhone 6S will roughly have the same battery life as the iPhone 6. This could indicate that Apple is banking on the power-saving capabilities of iOS 9. It’s really a bold move on Apple’s part.

INITIAL VERDICT: You might want to wait

iPhone 6S Buy or Not
If you’re a certified Apple fanatic, then by all means, get the iPhone 6S or 6S Plus because we’re sure that they’re great phones. Otherwise, it might be better for iPhone 6 / 6 Plus owners to wait next year for the iPhone 7 which will likely introduce new things including a new design or bigger screen. Glaring drawbacks are the 16GB base model, smaller battery and the fact that it’s a ‘6’ update.

Keep in mind that this is written based on the released specs alone. That could very well change once people actually get their hands on the iPhone 6S.
