After a fairly long wait, iOS 8.3 has finally been jailbroken, thanks to the efforts of the TaiG jailbreak team. However, the TaiG 2.0.0 and even the latest TaiG 2.1.2 have their fair share of issues. While most of the issues have been addressed by the TaiG team with version 2.1.2, many users are still reporting an issue about their app icons disappearing.
After jailbreaking their device on iOS 8.3 using TaiG 2.0 or TaiG 2.1.2, many users experienced the disappearing icons issue. Supposedly, version 2.1.2 has a workaround to stop this bug but many users have still been hit with it. As explained by Saurik via Reddit:
what TaiG did is to “wrap” my uicache with their own tool that used a risky feature of Substrate that I don’t expose as ABI (and believe I designed the TUI for poorly, by the way) to inject code into installd that seems to replicate a ton of the application scanning logic “just so” in order to make it work… but that only was possible if SpringBoard scanned the icons because of uicache. If there was any other reason SpringBoard scanned the icons (maybe due to someone deleting the icon cache) then SpringBoard would lose icons.
To fix this bug once and for all, Saurik has just released UIKit Tools 1.1.0 which now supports iOS 8.3 and fixes this annoying icons disappearing issue caused by the TaiG jailbreak.
To fix the disappearing icons issue after iOS 8.3 jailbreak or just altogether avoid the issue down the line, then installing UIKit Tools from Cydia is a must. To install, launch Cydia or simply reload it, then you’ll the ‘Essential Upgrade’ popup, tap Complete Upgrade and UIKit Tools 1.1.0 will be installed.
Saurik has also confirmed that the iOS 8.3 jailbreak is “stable enough” which should also allow Cydia developers to mark their products as iOS 8.3 compatible.
