One of the few things that was fixed by Apple using the iOS 8.1.1 update last week is the annoying connectivity issue with WiFi. Some folks who have updated to iOS 8 were affected by a bug which brought upon issues like preventing iOS devices from connecting WiFi networks, dropping connections, or just downright slow speeds. Unfortunately, jailbreakers can’t update to iOS 8.1.1 thus are still facing the issue. Well until now that is, because a new jailbreak tweak has been released to fix iOS 8 WiFi issues.
A new (and free) jailbreak tweak called WiFried, authored by Mario Ciabarra, is now available in Cydia. As you might expect, this tweak fixes the WiFi connectivity issue on iOS 8 to iOS 8.1. Ciabarra has written a detailed blog post explaining what exactly is causing these problems, and has something to do with Apple’s AWDL (Apple’s Wireless Direct Link) peer-to-peer connection. AirPlay, AirDrop, and a few peer-to-peer games are just some of apps using AWDL:
Perform a speed test (many apps to choose from) and simply pull open the Control Center. This will cause the discoveryd process to browse and advertise services over your WiFi interface. You’ll see an immediate reduction in WiFi speeds that will continue for a minute or two while the AWDL interface continues to browse/advertise.

Once installed, the WiFried jailbreak tweak will allow users to enable / disable the D2DWiFi / AWDL under the AirDrop settings in Control Center. This tweak should fix iOS 8 WiFi issues on your device. To be clear, this isn’t the same fix rolled out by Apple since that would need a kernel patch. WiFried is a free jailbreak tweak and is found under the ModMyi repo. If you want some help on how to jailbreak iOS 8.1, you can refer to our guide.
