At times, it can be challenging to keep the iPhone’s storage from running out of space, especially if you are a power user or you have the model with the least storage, or both. One of the main culprits that can really eat up your storage are photos and videos. Fortunately, iOS 8 has added a new feature that will keep photos from taking up too much storage space.
In iOS 8, Apple has included a new feature called iCloud Photo Library (Beta) and when enabled, full-resolution photos and videos will be stored in your iCloud account, which you can easily access from your Mac and other iOS 8 supported devices.
In terms of internal storage, once iCloud Photo Library (Beta) is enabled, you will be given two choices:
- Keep full-resolution copies of photos and videos on your iPhone
- Save photos and videos in "optimized" version
If you intend to minimize the storage space taken by your photos, you will obviously want the second option.
How to Enable iCloud Photo Library to Optimize iPhone Storage on iOS 8:
- Go to Settings
- Scroll a little bit down and tap iCloud
- Tap Photos
- Toggle the iCloud Photo Library (Beta) switch to ON
After enabling iCloud Photo Library (Beta), you will see two options which are “Optimize iPhone Storage” and “Download and Keep Originals.” If you want to keep your photos from hogging too much storage space, tap the “Optimize iPhone Storage” option. Your iPhone or iPad will now save your photos in smaller compressed versions.
How to Increase iCloud Storage Space?
Should you choose the “Download and Keep Originals” option, know that you will not be able to save any storage space since your iDevice will save the photos in full-resolution. Your iCloud account storage is quite limited but you can always increase storage space by buying them, starting at $0.99 / month for an extra 20GB space.
What Happens When I Disable iCloud Photo Library?
To disable the iCloud Photo Library feature, simply switch off the toggle. After which, you will be given two options:
- Remove from iPhone – This will remove all images and videos from the device, but they’ll be kept safe in iCloud.
- Download Photos & Videos – All your images and videos will be downloaded in their original resolution / size while keeping a backup in the cloud.
Hopefully, you’ll be able to optimize iPhone storage on iOS 8 using this guide. Let us know in the comments if you have any questions.Contact Us for News Tips, Corrections and Feedback
