How to Sync Google Contacts to iPhone

Google has stopped using the Exchange ActiveSync protocol in favor of CardDAV and CalDAV. When synchronizing contacts, Google now recommends that you use CardDAV. Naturally, this caused some confusion among users who want to sync Google Contacts to iPhone. But don't worry, syncing Google Contacts to iPhone is still a relatively easy task and today we will be showing you how.

By Adding Google Account:

  1. Launch Settings app on iPhone.
  2. Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
  3. Tap Add Account.
  4. Select Google.
  5. Now enter your Google account details in the following fields:

    Name: (Enter your name)
    User Name: (Input full Google Account or Google Apps email address)
    Password: (Google Account or Google Apps password)
    Description: (any description you want)

  7. Tap Next at the top of your screen.
  8. Make sure that the "Contacts" option is enabled (green).
  9. Tap Save.

By Adding CardDAV Account:

  1. Open Settings.app
  2. Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
  3. Tap Add Account....
  4. Tap Other.
  5. Tap Add CardDAV Account.
  6. Fill out the following fields accordingly:
  7. CardDAV

    Server: Enter "google.com"
    User Name: (Input your full Google Account or Google Apps email address)
    Password: (Your Google Account or Google Apps password)
    Description: (any description you want)

  8. Tap Next.
  9. Enable the "Contacts" option (green).

After you have either setup, launch the Contacts app from your iPhone and the syncing process should start immediately.

Troubleshooting Tips:

In case you run in you run into some issues while trying to sync Google Contacts to iPhone, you can try these troubleshooting steps:

  • Open the CardDAV account you have created by going to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars under Accounts. Ensure that Contacts is enabled. (For iOS 6 users and below, ensure that the Account option is enabled.)
  • If Account is already enabled, go to Account > Advanced and see to it that Use SSL is turned to ON. (For iOS 6 users and below, open Advanced Settings and make sure Use SSL is turned to ON.)
  • Make sure that you have saved the changes you've made by clicking Done and the top right of the Account screen.
  • In case you’re still experiencing issues trying to sync Google Contacts to iPhone via CardDAV, login to your Google account on the web. There might be an “Unusual sign-in location” prompt that needs to be acknowledgement.
