When it comes to cross-platform instant messaging apps, there's no doubt that WhatsApp takes the cake when it comes to popularity. However in iOS, WhatsApp is not exactly available for free. Although the app did went free on numerous occasions, it was always available in the App Store with a $0.99 price tag. However, that's about to change because WhatsApp is now free and likely for good.
Earlier this year, company executives announced that Whatsapp for iOS will soon move to a subscription model by the end of the year. This will effectively bring the iOS version of the app in line with the other platforms where the app can be downloaded for free but users are required to pay for an annual fee. In preparation for the adoption of the new subscription model, the developers is now offering the app for free and is likely to stay that way for good.
For those who have already purchased the app, don't fret because the new model is only applicable to new users. As mentioned, WhatsApp for Android is already on the subscription model. Downloading the app is free of charge and comes with a 1 year free trial. After a year and you still wish to keep using the app, you will have to shell out a subscription fee of $0.99. Since there are no other payment channels for digital content in iOS, the new subscription fee will likely be charged through in-app purchases.
As WhatsApp goes free, it comes with a fairly minor update which brings it to version 2.10.1. Now you can choose to send multiple photos at a time and backup or restore your chat history via iCloud. If you want to take advantage of this freebie, just download WhatsApp using the iTunes link below.
