We have received reports from that past that Apple is currently hard at work with the 13-inch iPad which was dubbed with a rather silly name, "iPad maxi". It has been a while since we've heard more about the but that's about to change. According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple is currently testing screens for both the iPad and iPhone.
The new report from WSJ suggests that Apple has asked its Asian suppliers for prototype smartphone screens that are larger than 4-inch as well as screen designs for the new iPad that's about 13-inches diagonally.
In recent months, Apple has asked for prototype smartphone screens larger than 4 inches and has also asked for screen designs for a new tablet device measuring slightly less than 13 inches diagonally, they said. The current iPhone 5 has a four-inch screen, while the iPad has a 9.7-inch screen. The iPad Mini, a stripped-down version of its tablet computer, has a 7.9-inch screen.
According to the publication, Apple is motivated to experiment with different screen sizes due to the increased competition presented by companies like Samsung. Keep in mind that it's routine for Apple to test prototypes of new products although many of them are not actually released. So this report is not really a far-fetched idea. For all we know, Apple could be currently testing in its factory an iPad as large as the MacBook or perhaps an iPhone as large as Samsung's flagship phones. It's all part of the Cupertino company's R&D.
As stated, while we can't discount the possibility that Apple is testing a 13-inch iPad and a larger screen iPhone, it is still unlikely that they will make it to the market. But who knows? Apple might surprise us with a new hardware announcement this year.
