Happy April First everyone! Yes, this is that time of the year when the world is suddenly filled with pranksters, hoaxers and trolls. To take part into the mischievousness, several big names within the tech industry have thrown in their efforts at being funny for April Fools 2013. We took the liberty of highlighting some of the most notable tech-related April Fools jokes found over the interwebs. This is the April Fools 2013 - Top 10 Best Tech Pranks on the Web.
April Fools 2013 - Top 10 Best Tech Pranks on the Web
Perhaps, one of the companies that certainly brought their A-game in this year's April Fools is Google. The big G has some of the heavy-hitters pranks on the web. Perhaps one of the most notable ones is Google Nose. In order to enhance the search experience, Google has introduced the innovative Google Nose. The feature "seamlessly connects scents to search." Could this be a peek at future tech possibilities? Got to hand this one to Google. This right here is the smell of April 1st success.
YouTube Shutting Down
Now this is another heavy-hitter from the big G. After eight years, Google has decided to shut down YouTube. As it turned out, YouTube is not really a video streaming service but it's actually an American Idol-esque competition with the goal of finding the best video in the world. And as of March 31st, it was announced that YouTube won't be accepting "entries" and everything will be deleted. This is one April Fools' joke that likely made tons of folks panic.
Google is certainly on a roll here. This one took the search engine “six years to develop the technology” and what exactly did the brilliants minds at Google hatched? Well, it certainly took them awhile to get here, but finally, Gmail is turning blue. Gmail Blue is none other than a palette swap. Passionate lovers of the color blue are certainly disappointed this is not real.
Twitter has announced a new "two-tier" service with the free portion called “Twttr”. When using Twttr, you can tweet to your heart's content, just without the fundamental building blocks of the English language, the vowels. If you want your precious vowels back, you just need to pay an affordable $5 monthly fee. Is this Twitter's jab at folks who murder the English language because they seem to hate writing vowels? You can give it a try here.
Samsung Smart Eco Tree
The South Korean company is not about to take the back seat when it comes to this year's April Fools' jokes. Introducing the new Smart Eco Tree, "a smart, eco-friendly air purifier that runs on solar energy." This tree has revolutionary features that have never-before-seen in other Smart trees such as Air Fresh, FOTA (Fragrance Over-The-Air), SMART Cooling, SMART View, Group Play and many others. One can say that Apple is way ahead of Samsung in this one since Apple trees have been around for quite a while now (hurr durr).
Instagram for Windows Phone
Now this is one cruel joke to make. Instagram is one of the most popular apps for mobile devices these days, but Windows Phone users are left out. Teasing Windows Phone users like this is definitely a mean-spirited attempt at being funny. However, it's quite sure that iOS and Android users have gotten a good laugh out of this.
Nokia Windows Phone Microwave
Nokia is branching out from offering mobile devices to invading your kitchen. Dubbed as the Nokia 5AM-TH1N6 Constellation (awesome name btw), this touch-screen microwave oven features superfast, water-cooled 8-core high-voltage transformer which can "heat up turnkey meal solutions within seconds." At €399, you can now reheat you leftovers in style. While I think this is a pretty neat April Fools' joke, I can't help but feel sad that this isn't a real product simply because it looks so cool.
Sony Tech for Pets
If you're one doting master to your pets, why not take it up a notch by letting them have their own shiny gadgetries? Well, Sony stepped up and created a line of products just for your furry friends. A speaker system just for your hamsters? A high-end headphone cans for your cats? Sony has got you covered with their Animalia line of tech products.
Moveover Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo, the next gaming generation has been won. The Toshibasphere features "unprecedented computing power, a completely controller-free interface, and Logical Aggression Monitoring that deploys positive therapeutics to prevent emotionally devastating rage-quits." I would actually love to play that MMO staredown game.
Eye of Sauron Desk Lamp
Here's another product that made me all depressed because it's not real. Thinkgeek's Eye of Sauron Desk Lamp is an exact model of Barad-dûr, the Fortress of Sauron complete with a roving eye that will watch you as you work. I just realized, I hate April Fools' Day. :)
