There's very little doubt that the Evasi0n jailbreak is one of the most popular. However since the release of Evasi0n, we have been receiving all sorts of complaints regarding errors and issues associated with the jailbreak. One of the most common errors that people experienced (although Evasi0n has been the first instance I've heard of the error) is Cydia's “Wow, you exceeded the number of package names this APT is capable of” Cydia error. Here's why this particular Cydia error occurs and how you can fix it.
The Wow, you exceeded the number of package names this APT is capable of Cydia error isn't actually a bug, as per definition. This has something to do with how Cydia was designed. Saurik, the creator of Cydia, was able to clear some things about this mysterious error on Reddit.
It is a limitation in Cydia (technically it isn’t a “bug”, but it is certainly irritating). This will be fixed at some point, hopefully soon, but currently it is only affecting people who insist on installing every single repository in existence, which is generally dis-recommended for numerous reasons anyway (if nothing else, by installing a repository, you are agreeing to enter their universe, so you shouldn’t do that unless you trust them to not, for example, attempt to push you upgrades to essential packages). As it stands, even if you install all of the default repositories and all of the large international ones, there is plenty of headroom.
There you go! Apparently, the packages in Cydia are organized in a local data store. This particular data store is only limited to 65,000 packages. As you install Cydia, it already comes with 40,000 packages by default. So that leaves you with 25,000 extra packages to install. If you are someone who installed a plethora of repositories, then it's likely that you will quickly exceed the package limit.
How do you fix the Wow, you exceeded the number of package names this APT is capable of Cydia error? As Saurik have said, a fix will be applied in the future. Otherwise, you will have no choice but to delete some of your sources. You can do this by navigating to Cydia > Manage > Sources > Edit. A good course of action is to go into safe mode, launch Cydia and delete any sources, which you haven't installed any packages from. Although, you might not want to uninstall some of the default repositories like ModMyi, ZodTTD, BigBoss etc.Contact Us for News Tips, Corrections and Feedback
