If you've been keeping yourself informed concerning the latest jailbreak news, you should know things aren't going good as far as the untethered iOS 6 jailbreak is concerned. It was around Christmas of 2011 we'd enjoyed the untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 but now, things are still unclear. Yesterday, Pod2g sparked an online petition, which was taken as a sign of defeat by some. Well fortunately, it's not all bad news because the folks actively working on the untethered iOS 6 jailbreak have something good to say.
Yeah, I'm not really sure what all the doom and gloom is about. The fact is, I have an untethered iOS 6.0.2 JB running on my iPhone 5 right now. The reasons it's not released are because 1. releasing it would burn an exploit we want to save for ourselves so we can always get in to look at new firmware and help JB in the future, 2. iOS 6.1 is coming very soon and will likely break a small part of it anyway, there's no point in sacrificing the many bugs it won't break.
Anyway, where there are 4+ bugs (that it took to get this to work), there's gotta be one or two more so while jailbreaking is getting harder, reports of its death are highly exaggerated.
This is not stuff I want to say over Twitter with 140 characters because I'm afraid of starting some sort of riot, but I like the smaller /r/ jailbreak community more. ;)
As you can see, iOS 6.0.2 has been jailbroken, which means newer devices, like the iPhone 5 and iPad Mini, are in the clear. In fact, an untethered jailbreak is currently running on Planetbeing's iPhone 5. So, for those who've updated to iOS 6, it's safe to say you're clear to update to iOS 6.0.2.
So if there's the jailbreak, why isn't it released yet? You know how it is with the cat and mouse game between jailbreak developers and Apple. They are likely waiting for the Cupertino outfit to release a major firmware version like the iOS 6.1 before releasing the untethered jailbreak. It will make little sense if they release now and only have Apple patch the exploits on iOS 6.1. Besides there are still missing components to the jailbreak and they don't want to sacrifice the key exploits by releasing it now. Planetbeing has been in contact with Pod2g as well:
[Pod2g] told me last night he looked into a couple of bugs (without much success) recently, after basically not being around since WWJC, so that's cool. I doubt he wants to promise he'll be around working on this full time however. I haven't worked on any jailbreak stuff for a couple of months as well, not until basically I was flying back from 29C3 in Germany and realized/remembered I actually know about enough bugs to put together an entire untethered jailbreak (still unreleasable due to reasons I stated in my other comment here).
Well, things are looking up after all. As far as untethered iOS 6 jailbreak news go, this is one of the most positive ones we've received in quite a while. So guys, don't lose hope because there are hardworking folks who are constantly working to bring the untethered iOS 6 jailbreak to you, the fans. We'll just have to be patient and give all the support the we can provide.Contact Us for News Tips, Corrections and Feedback
