The fight for consumers between Apple and Google has reached two important new milestones: Google Play has caught up with the App Store as its count hits approximately 700,000 apps for Android and Google Search challenges Siri with its new update. Google updated its Google Search iOS app on Tuesday and brought new search features that compete directly with Siri. The internet giant even calls its new updated app "the most advanced voice search" on iOS questioning Siri's abilities and gives a couple examples of how the app can be used.
“What does Yankee Stadium look like?” - Google will show you hundreds of pictures instantly.
“Play me a trailer of the upcoming James Bond movie.” - The trailer starts playing immediately right within Google Search.
“When does daylight savings time end?” - The answer will appear above the search results, so you can set your clock without having to click on a link.
“Who’s in the cast of The Office?” - See a complete cast list and find out who made you crack up last night.
During our testing the service felt pretty fast, recognizing words while we were speaking instead of displaying them all at once at the end. Also as a commenter on Hacker News reported, it even works on iPhone 4. This is significant news when you consider the issues Apple has encountered lately with its own hardware and software that has recently been released. A small window of opportunity for Apple's competitors has opened up, and the large gap that Apple once had appears to be diminishing.
