Over the past few weeks, it was strongly rumored that Apple will be holding a special media event this month, something which was recently confirmed by the folks over at Cupertino. It was also widely rumored that the event was going to be the platform for where the iPad mini would be introduced. As it turned out, it wasn't just the iPad Mini taking the spotlight, as various Apple products also made an appearance along with their expected updates and upgrades. Following the announcement of the new 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display, Apple also announced a new Mac mini. Here's what you need to know about the New Mac mini 2012.
That's right folks, Apple has just updated the Mac mini 2012 with a newer, faster configuration. Perhaps one of the most notable improvements would be the adoption of the Ivy Bridge microarchitecture which is pretty much the standard for desktop processors nowadays. Much like the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display, you have the choice between two processor configurations. The new Mac mini 2012 is available in 2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 or 2.6GHz quad-core Intel Core i7. This new model is about twice as fast as the previous generation dual-core Mac mini. This is definitely a good thing because you know that you are getting the latest tech for your hard-earned cash.
As for its graphical muscle, the new Mac mini 2012 comes with an integrated graphics card, an Intel HD Graphics 4000 to be exact. While it can handle some pretty old gaming titles, don't expect to be playing Battlefield 3 or Crysis 2 on this new Mac mini. As for the storage capacity, the Mac mini 2012 comes with either a 500GB or 1TB 5400-rpm hard drive which are definitely more than enough for most users. You can also configure your Mac mini 2012 to have up to 256GB of flash storage in a solid-state drive as opposed to the traditional hard drive. By doing this, you can significantly improve the performance of your little box such as faster boot-up and app launching. As for its memory, it comes with 4GB of RAM. A server edition of the new Mac mini 2012 is available as well with a whopping 2TB storage capacity.
As for the connectivity aspect, along with the standard Bluetooth and WiFi connection, the new Mac mini 2012 also integrates the latest USB connectivity standard, which is USB 3.0. You also have 4 USB 3.0 slots, an HDMI slot, an SD card slot, a Gigabit Ethernet port, a Firewire port, and a Thunderbolt port as well. Audio I/O is present as well. With this, Apple has pretty much covered most, if not all requirements in terms of connectivity.
The new Mac mini 2012 is now being sold as of this posting. The best part is, despite the considerable specs bump, the price of the Mac mini remains the same. With that said, the Mac mini 2012 is available for the starting price of $599 (2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5, 4GB RAM, 500GB hard drive), the higher end model for $799 (2.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i7, 4GB RAM, 1TB hard drive), and the server edition for $999 (2.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i7, 4GB RAM, Two 1TB hard drives).
