One of the hottest gadgets that is certainly gaining a lot of media attention lately is Apple's very own venture into the miniature tablet market, the iPad mini. Like most Apple products, the hype surrounding the iPad mini has been phenomenal as it is preceded by relentless rumors and speculations. And now, the fact that pre-order units have been swiftly sold out, it looks like the Cupertino company has another commercial winner on their hands. One of the latest buzzes that have surrounded the iPad mini lately is that the Cupertino company allegedly opted to incorporate a stereo variety speaker system, which is actually a first when it comes to the iPad line. Apple’s Senior Vice President of Marketing Phil Schiller has something to say about that.
When Phil Schiller talked about the iPad mini on stage during the October 23rd media event, he wasn't able to elaborate regarding the speaker on the new device. The tech specs for iPad mini which is found on Apple's website only lists a “built-in speaker” for the tablet. So this somehow made some people stir some rumors that the miniature iPad will be sporting a mono speaker. To add more to this rumor, Amazon posted a comparison ad between the Kindle Fire HD and iPad mini, citing that the former have stereo speakers, in comparison to the latter's mono speaker, as one of its advantages. Amazon has since then taken down the advert of this posting.
Over at 9to5Mac, one of their readers was curious enough to find out the truth about this rumor that he directly sent an email to Phil Schiller, to which he got a response. The email exchange was confirmed to be authentic. The email from reader Alex went:
Hi Mr. Schiller,
I understand the tech specs about iPad Mini online should cover everything, but the tech specs online neither confirm or deny the rumors of iPad Mini’s speakers being stereo. Is it possible to get confirmation from the man himself as to whether these are mono or stereo?
“It is stereo”
And there you have it, a confirmation that the iPad mini have stereo speakers from Mr. Schiller himself. It may not be the most official confirmation of sorts but there is simply no reason for Schiller to lie. Normally, Schiller doesn't respond to all customer emails but it seems that he is compelled to do so if it involves some controversy regarding Apple. In addition to the confirmation of Schiller, several initial reviews of the iPad mini has also confirmed the fact that the iPad mini does have stereo speakers.
So it seems that those who will be getting their iPad mini on November 2 will get to enjoy enhanced sound quality with the inclusion of stereo speakers. It's interesting to note that Apple still opted to use the standard mono setup for the iPad 4.
