Introducing: The iPad Mini

Today was a big day for Apple and for all Apple fans who were watching the iPad mini event. One of the company's best-selling devices, the iPad - which by the way, recently surpassed the 100 million units sold milestone - has shrunk both in size and in price to become the iPad mini. Apple's iPad mini event held true and here are the details of the newest device.

iPad mini

We were expecting this to happen so it didn't come as news, but still, it's great news for all those who have wanted to purchase an iPad, but maybe thought it was too big or too expensive. The iPad mini is 23% thinner and 53% lighter than the third-generation iPad with Retina Display, and features a stunning 7.9-inch multitouch display with the same resolution as the iPad 2: 1,024 × 768 pixels.

The iPad mini comes with FaceTime HD and an iSight 5 MP camera, and underneath its beautiful 7.9-inch screen is the Apple A5 chip. The device is 7.2mm thin (about the same as a pencil) and weighs only 0.68 pounds. The display manages to get 35% more screen real estate than the 7-inch tablets already on the market and up to 67% more usable viewing area for a better Web browsing experience.

The iPad mini of course utilizes the Lightning dock connector, and Apple has introduced several more Lightning connector accessories to support cameras, SD cards and VGA or HDMI digital video. Also, Apple has designed brand new polyurethane smart covers especially for the iPad mini. They are available in pink, green, blue, light gray, dark gray, and red for $39.

And now the pricing you were so eager to know: the entry-level iPad mini with Wi-Fi only will be available starting November 2 for $329 (US) and here are the configurations:

  • 16 GB Wi-Fi only $329
  • 32 GB Wi-Fi only $429
  • 64 GB Wi-Fi only $529

The iPad mini with Wi-Fi + Cellular pricing:

  • 16 GB $459
  • 32 GB $559
  • 64 GB $659

The iPad mini is available in two colors: black & slate, and white & silver. They will both be available for pre-order starting October 26 through the Apple Online Store in the US, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the UK and will be available in stores beginning November 2.

We will surely be in line to purchase at least one of these beautiful little guys. Will you be grabbin an iPad mini for yourself?

I expect Apple to drop the price sooner than later. How can they compete if their tablet is more expensive than the competitors?
