Are You Willing to Pay $1000 For a Microsoft Surface Tablet?

There is a lot of hype surrounding the Microsoft Surface tablet ever since the company presented it: indeed the Surface will be MS’s entry into the fast growing tablet market, so aside from quality, price will have an essential role in its success. When asked about the price Microsoft was secretive, so no one knows what to expect until now, as you can already pre-order the MS Surface tablet.

The Swedish website has already listed Microsoft Surface’s pricing and if the details are correct, the decision to purchase one will be a tough one, despite the expected no-brainer. The price of the cheapest ARM based, 32GB Wi-Fi only model is 6990 SEK or $1,000, double the entry-level iPad’s price.

There were previous whispers suggesting that WinRT tablets will meet the current price tag of ARM tablets on the market. In terms of price comparison, the iPad is—at this moment—way ahead of the MS Surface, and this is the high-end of the tablet market. With the recent launch of the Google Nexus 7 tablet and the preparation of the iPad Mini, Microsoft will be facing hard times to gain market share.

We are looking forward to getting our hands on the Surface tablet, but if these prices are correct the device will be as expensive as an ultra-book, dragging down the buying rate. We anticipated the Surface to cost as much as the iPad, and seems we were too optimistic.

In addition, the description mentions Wi-Fi only connectivity while the most expensive 64Gb iPad costs $829 and it connects to the internet over cellular networks, compared to the 32Gb Wi-Fi only iPad costing $599. That’s $400 less than the entry-level Microsoft Surface. We are wondering whether the company will keep this price tag. Would you buy a Microsoft Surface tablet for a thousand dollars? Update: Webhallen statement below

Our customers are very interested in pre-ordering these products, so we have set a high preliminary pricing for the lineup so that they may be able to pre-order them.

Just to clarify, we have not recieved any pricing from Microsoft regarding MRSP or purchasing net cost, and any people who have booked the Surface at this high price will of course have their order adjusted before any product is shipped. So we’re not going to overcharge anyone for being an early adopter.
