According to sources of Digitimes, Apple will release a cheap Macbook Air later this year, as a response on the upcoming second-generation Ultrabooks. Although there are always rumors about the Macbook lineup, this is not the first time this particular rumor has appeared. But it looks a logical step for Apple for gaining a bigger share in a very competitive notebook market by offering a broader price-range for this popular product.
Currently, Apple's 11-inch 64GB MacBook Air is priced at US$999 with a 128GB version priced at US$1,199. The 13-inch 128GB version is priced at US$1,299 and 256GB version is US$1,599. Although the Macbook Air is extremely popular, but a lot of people do struggle with the price. According to the new rumors, Apple would target the low-end of the market for a price of $799. Unfortunately, nothing is said about the screensize and other specifications.
Digitimes quoted this rumor from an unmentioned source in Apple’s upstream supply-chain. Digitimes has a reasonable record for his sources, so let’s have a look at this somewhat closer.
Cheap Macbook Air
Apple’s rumored move can be presented in several ways:
- First, it can be a stripped Macbook Air 11,6”. Problem is the fact that there is not much left to strip anymore. Apple already did his best to make the Macbook Air not too expensive for starters and students.
- Second, Apple can make a whole new line of laptops, with or without a merge of the Macbook Air and the Macbook Pro. The price-range could be $799 to $2.499 for the most expensive model. This last price is a good guess, because Apple never introduced a new model and raising the price at the same time.
- Other possibility is that Apple will keep the Macbook Air as it is, but will be lowered in price, while introducing a complete new and upgraded line of Macbook Air.
Same Strategy Was Used for iPhone and iPad
In Fact, the last one is an interesting approach, because Apple already used the same with the iPhone and the iPad. With the introduction of the last iPhone and the last iPad, Apple kept the ‘old’ models and lowered them in price. In this very competitive market it is more and more important for Apple to gain and keep market share in the lower-priced part.
Until now, not very much is said or rumored about a new line-up for the Macbook Air, let alone a cheap Macbook Air. Most rumors focus on the next Macbook Pro-line. Facts about merging the two productlines are most rumored, and even that could fit well with this recent rumor about a cheap Macbook Air.
What do you think? Is there still a market share for Apple in this over-crowded and extremely competitive market? Would you buy a cheap Macbook Air?
