When it comes to the home console race in current generation, one can say Sony's PlayStation 3 isn't exactly leading. While the PlayStation brand has completely dominated the last two previous console generations, Sony has failed to retain its crown for the present one. This can be attributed to the fact that the PlayStation 3 joined the race a little too late, so it will be interesting how Sony will handle the launch of the PlayStation 4. But still, PlayStation 3 has managed to be competitive with its cutting-edge hardware and excellent line-up of first party games. Last year was great for PS3 games, exclusives titles like Little Big Planet 2, Uncharted 3 and Resistance 3 made the mark. So what PS3 games can fans expect from their console this year?
Top 10 PS3 Games of 2012
The Last Guardian
From the makers of the sublime ICO and Shadow of the Colossus, Team ICO. This game would have been a lot higher on this list if it wasn't for the fact that its creator and executive producer left and pre-orders were cancelled. Now despite all that, if Team ICO can manage to work their magic on the PlayStation 3, gamers will be treated to yet another magical adventure that will be hard to forget. We just hope it finally gets a release date.
The successor to the criminally underrated Warhawk, Starhawk has managed to up the ante and is looking to top its predecessor in just about every aspect. Starhawk is a unique game as it combines several gameplay mechanics such as aerial battles, building structures, and infantry combat. And this is what makes this game a lot of fun because players are given choices and not given a single gameplay element to choose from. The action is fast paced and is almost always frantic especially when it is in multiplayer. Watch out for Starhawk in May.
Resident Evil 6
The reveal trailer for Resident Evil 6 is definitely one of the most exciting releases in a while. This time players will be able to control two major series staple characters Leon Kennedy and Chris Redfield. And this time your missions will not only take place in a certain locations but in several places across the globe. And from the looks of things, it seems that zombies are now back in the series. It seems that the game will be mixing survival horror and action. Hopefully, they can make a better game than Resident Evil 5, which was kind of lackluster as compared with RE4.
Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time
The Sly Cooper series back in the PlayStation 2 are some of the most critically acclaimed games for the console. What's worth noting is that it is not developed by the folks behind the superhero mayhem inFamous and its sequel, Sucker Punch but rather by Sanzaru Games. The company is now looking to give the PlayStation 3 its first true, new Sly Cooper adventure (aside from the HD re-release in 2010). Expect some truly epic performing along with rock-solid gameplay.
Ni No Kuni: Wrath Of The White Witch
This game has been stirring some buzz mainly because the guys responsible for this are perfect match. This RPG is the result of the collaboration of Studio Ghibli known for stellar animated films such as My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away and Level-5; and the developers of Professor Layton games and Dark Cloud. From what it looks like, this game is looking to satiate the cravings of RPG fans everywhere with its beautifully crafted worlds and its gameplay which is a mix of classic and modern RPG sensibilities. Definitely a worthy addition to the library of RPG fans everywhere.
Prequels and reboots seem to be one of the most prevalent trends in the video game industry nowadays. Now everyone's favorite tomb-raiding lass, Lara Croft gets the reboot treatment as well. Tomb Raider features some truly gritty (albeit fantastic) visuals and it holds true with the protagonist Ms. Croft. This game features a young Lara Croft and she will be exploring the mysterious, yet deadly tropical island. Will the PlayStation 3 household name Nathan Drake have some real competition coming?
Assassin's Creed III
Now when it comes to AAA titles, it is hard not to touch upon the Assassin's Creed series. And what makes this upcoming title a lot more exciting is the fact that it now includes a whole new setting and main protagonist. Set in the American Revolution, the game puts you in the shoe of a new assassin named Connor Kenway. What's more interesting is the fact that the game doesn’t have you scale the buildings but instead trees. We can't wait to see some gameplay footage anytime soon.
I know we've been featuring this game for every top ten upcoming games we post for this year, but can you blame us? If you have seen the gameplay videos, then you will know just how awesome this game will turn out. You have jaw-dropping visuals, excellent music and sound design, fresh, innovative gameplay, epic set-pieces, and who knows what else? And of course, it is not like both Bioshock games weren't excellent in the first place. Easily one of the most anticipated games for this year.
Grand Theft Auto V
Well it is a new Grand Theft Auto game, how can anyone not be excited? Not much is known about the game yet aside from the introduction trailer released by Rockstar Games. Although now it is quite certain that the game will be taking place in Los Santos - the City of Lost Saints. We really do not know what to expect from the game but we are quite sure that whatever it is that is about to be revealed will surely blow our socks off.
The Last Of Us
When we heard that Naughty Dog Games, known as the developers of sublime series such as Uncharted and Jak & Daxter, has been working on a brand-new IP, we were naturally ecstatic. I mean this developer has been churning out AAA games one after another, so it is hard not to expect greatness. The game is set on post-apocalyptic America where the main characters will have to survive a world ravaged by a deadly disease due to fungal infestation. This is the first time Naughty Dog has dipped their hands into the survival horror genre and we can't wait to see the results.
