Serviio Media Server, Stream Media From PC To Smartphone, Tablet, Xbox 360, PS3 And More

Serviio Media Server is a brand new free media server that has been developed by London based JavaScript developer Peter Nejedly. This free media server allows multiple file types to be streamed to what the developer has named renderer devices. These devices include Televisions, Blu-ray and DVD players, Game consoles and even Smartphones as long as they are all connected to the same network.

Serviio Media Server

Serviio has been compared to the open source Xbox Media Centre platform which has become really popular with jailbroken Apple TV users. Unlike the Xbox Media Center, Serviio requires only a DLNA device to view all of the content. So you might be wondering, what is so great about Serviio and why should I try it?

Why Serviio Media Server

First and foremost, Serviio is free. It has also gained a great deal of popularity with over one million downloads so far and rising daily. Servio also has an advanced feature set which includes streaming audio, video (SD &HD) and image files in their native format which is transcoded on the fly in real time. Serviio also allows users to stream content from online sources such as RSS feeds and live online video feeds. It includes a plug-in-system which allows services such as Hulu and iPlayer to be used. It supports video thumbnails, CD covers and DVD posters. It is available for Windows, Linux and Mac and it supports external subtitles. Serviio also contains a wide array of localized library browsing options and it automatically updates the media library when you add/update/remove a media file. There are plenty more great features, but it would take too long to list them all here.

Serviio Media Server Features

The Serviio Media Server is based on Java technology which allows it to be used on a number of different platforms. This gives Serviio additional power and it works with a large number of renders as well as being able to recognize a large number of media formats. The list of formats and renders has been listed below to help you to see exactly what this software can do.
