If you are trying to unlock your iPhone baseband to use a different carrier from what your contract says, you might be confused about the whole unlock process. There are many different phones with many different operations systems. This post will help you understand what are iPhone basebands?
iPhone Basebands, What Are They?
A baseband is essentially the software that your phone modem is using (a modem is the device in your phone that allows you to make calls and access the internet). This is a different set of software than the operating system that your iPhone is using. Examples of an iPhone operating system, or iOS, is iOS 5.1. iOS 5.1 is the newest operating system from Apple. An example of a baseband, or BB for short, would be BB 4.11.08.
The baseband is normally upgraded when you upgrade the operating system but they are two different things! There are also ways of upgrading your operating system without upgrading your baseband. This process is a bit more complicated than a normal jailbreak and unlock and is not covered in this article.
How Can I Unlock My iPhone Baseband?
At the moment there are 2 ways to unlock your iPhone, a physical unlock and a software unlock. Both of these methods work equally as well and are just different means to the same end…being able to use a different carrier!
iPhone Baseband Unlock Through Hardware
At the moment the normal method of unlocking your baseband through hardware is with what is called a sim interposer. This is a device that goes between your iPhone and your sim card. This is normally the most simple method and has been heavily relied on iPhone unlockers until recently.
Currently, Gevey sim works to unlock the following basebands:
01.59 – 02.10 and 03.10.1 – 04.10.1 using Gevey Ultra
1.0.11, 1.0.13 and 1.0.14 using Gevey UltraS
Currently there is no unlock for BB 4.11.08! This is the baseband used on iPhone 4s that have upgraded to iOS 5.
iPhone Baseband Unlock Through Software
This is the oldest method. The main method is through a program called Ultrasn0w. However, these baseband unlocks normally take lots of time to develop. This means that the people needing an unlock must wait a long time before they can actually get an unlock for newer basebands. If you want to try to unlock your iPhone through ultrasn0w, you must first jailbreak your iPhone.
Ultrasn0w Basebands Support
At the moment, Ultrasn0w supports/can unlock the following basebands:
06.15.00 (Special iPad Baseband)
How to Check iPhone Baseband
It is extremely easy to check your baseband. Simple go to Settings>General>About. In this section you will see a label called “Modem Firmware” and this is your iPhone baseband.
iPhone Baseband Unlock Rumors
If your baseband isn’t on this list then you are probably out of luck for the moment. Try to be careful before giving money to anyone who claims to be able to unlock any baseband other than what has been listed above. Due to people’s desperation for an unlock regarding BB 4.11.08 (the iPhone 4 baseband for iOS5), there have been many different rumors coming from a variety of different sources about unlocks.
As of yet all of these have proven to be scams or attempts at attention. In the past few months there has been a huge debate over react0r, a supposed unlock for iPhone baseband 4.11.08. There has been no evidence of this working so far. Gevey sim has confirmed that they are working on a hardware unlock for the iPhone 4 running baseband 4.11.08. Hopefully the unlock for this iPhone baseband will come out soon.
