If you have been keeping tabs on the smartphone industry for quite some time now, you will know that Apple’s iPhone line has been garnering phenomenal success. Apple announced during its Q1 2012 earnings that the iPhone managed to sell an impressive 37 million units in only a single quarter. So what are the top selling smartphones in the year 2011?
According to ComScore‘s 2012 Mobile Future in Focus whitepaper, the top three most popular smartphones sold in the United States for the year 2011 are all iPhones. The three top selling devices are the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4S. The rest of the spots are filled by RIM’s Blackberry Curve and HTC Evo 4G.
So despite the phenomenal sales of the iPhone 4S, why is it not the top selling smartphone of 2011? Well you have to take into account that the iPhone 4S was only made available during the last three months of 2011. It is quite impressive that it has still managed to outsell other non-iPhone devices despite being sold at a much shorter period.
The iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS taking the first and top spot is not the least bit surprising as both are being sold during the entire year of 2011. It worth noting that the oldest iPhone on retail, the iPhone 3GS, still manages to make an impact in the market. It is safe to assume that being priced at $99 really did help. Once the iPhone 4S went on sale, the price was lowered to $50.
With the iPad 3 being expected to be launched next month and the iPhone 5 sometime later this year, it looks like Apple is not slowing down anytime soon. We will see if the Cupertino company manages to keep its throne for the year 2012. [via MacRumors]
