While the iOS platform is indeed a legitimate gaming platform now, there are those that think that its touch-exclusive controls will severely limit the type of games that it can play. One such genre of games that many believed that iOS can't handle are fighting games, with its advanced control maneuvers in order to pull-off moves. But such notion was blown out of the water when the great grandfather of fighting game franchises was ported to the iOS, Street Fighter 4. And now, another premier fighting game hits the iOS, Soul Calibur.
Developed by Project Soul, Soul Calibur is fighting game that originally from the arcade and was later ported to the Dreamcast. It set itself apart from other fighting games because its gameplay is entirely weapon-based. It was widely revered when it came out and is often cited to be one of the best fighting games of all time. I myself have some fond memories about this game and I can hold myself well on the arcades using my main characters Mitsurugi, Astaroth and Lizardman.
So what can you expect from the iOS version of Soul Calibur? Well here are the many different game modes according to its App Store page:
ARCADE BATTLE. The original battle mode from the arcade version of "Soul Calibur." Defeat all enemies to make it to the end of the game.
TIME ATTACK. How fast can you beat the game?
SURVIVAL. With only a limited amount of life, how many opponents can you defeat?
EXTRA SURVIVAL. How many opponents can you can defeat with single-hit kills?
MUSEUM. Enjoy viewing a variety of artwork.
PRACTICE. Learn the game's basic system and techniques.
The developers are planning to add more modes into this port in the future and we do hope that one of them includes online multiplayer. One of the best joys of playing Soul Calibur was competing with an actual player rather than the AI, so an online multiplayer for this port is a must. Another sort of deal-breaker for this game is the high price point, which is $11.99. It is doubtful that many casual gamers will be picking this game up. And if you want to get it, we suggest that you do so now because it is currently on its introductory price sale.
Soul Calibur for the iOS is a universal app although it will only work with the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch 4G and iPad 2 (no support for original iPad). Buy the game from using the iTunes link below.
