There are many of you that are still rocking old devices like the iPhone 2G/3G or the original iPod touch. Apple products are generally durable so it is no wonder if many people are still using old hardware. But there is one moment that many old device owners generally dread, and that is when Apple stops to support their devices with regards to firmware updates. That certainly happened when iOS 5 was launched, old iPhones and iPod touches have been taken into the backseat. But don't fret, there is a custom firmware that will let you install a ported version of iOS 5 into your old devices.
The name of the custom firmware is called WhiteD00r from the WhiteD00r dev team. It is basically a custom version of the iOS 3.1.3 which is specially created to work with old-school generation devices. The point of WhiteD00r is to port many of the bells and whistles of iOS 5. This includes the prominent features of later iOS versions such as Folders, customizable wallpapers, Newsstand, multitasking, Reminders and so on.
Some of these features are not made available to older devices because it will significantly slow them down. But with WhiteD00r, you will get some of the features of iOS 5 without worrying about any slowdown. In fact, based on their video demos, WhiteD00r is quite fast because this is not actually iOS 5 and is based on iOS 3.1.3, so you can have the extra features without compromising performance. And best of all, you do not even need to jailbreak your device in order to use WhiteD00r. It comes with a built-in jailbreak which includes a version of Cydia.
But of course, this port of iOS 5 so to speak, is far from being perfect. It will be missing a couple of key iOS 5 features such as the lack of iCloud (the custom firmware uses Dropbox instead), Notification Center and possibly the biggest deal-breaker is the inability to access the iTunes App Store. But there is a workaround, you just have to download the app through iTunes in your computer and then sync the app from there.
Installing WhiteD00r is easy enough and won't even require you to put your device into DFU mode. You will simply need to hold down Shift in Windows or Option in Mac, click Restore on iTunes and manually select the WhiteD00r custom firmware (download links are below). For a more detailed instructions, you can read this WhiteD00r installation guide. Before installation, you might want to read a warning from the developers:
This process is safe and tested, but you are doing this at your own risk. For this reason we suggest to backup your data (whited00r5 offers iCloud application to backup your Game saves). We absolutely recommend that you make a clean installation without restoring from a backup and we will not provide support if this rule is not respected.
