iOS 5, Apple's most advanced operating system offers about 200+ new features that aims to further improve an iOS device owner's user experience. Arguably among all the new additions to iOS 5, the Notification Center is one of the most essential. Yes, compared to the previous notification system which was highly intrusive and even annoying, Notification Center is definitely a step up. But what's truly great about the new notification system is its potential for added functionality, a fact that many jailbreak developers have realized. Now we have another tweak for you that utilizes the iOS 5 Notification Center.
Bundled with the default Notification Center are two widgets, Weather and Stocks. One's certainly useful while the other, not so much for an average user. It is unknown yet if the Cupertino company is planning to allow third-party widgets to be installed on Notification Center. But considering just how closed the iOS system is, it won't be surprising if Apple decides not to do so. But hey, this is why we jailbreak our devices right?
As mentioned, today's jailbreak tweak is intended to add additional functionality to iOS 5's Notification Center. The tweak in question is called WeeSearch which adds a new search feature to the Notification Center. If you have been using your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to surf through the net, then you should have a fairly good idea just how useful this tweak is. WeeSearch allows the user to choose from four different search engines: Google, YouTube, Wikipedia and Dictionary. Sure it is a bit limited but it should be more than enough for the most basic uses. After inputting your search term, you will then be redirected to Safari with the search results. With this tweak, you won't be needing to open Mobile Safari just for your search engine queries.
We have thoroughly tested the tweak and we can say that it works just as well as advertised. There seems to be some bugs and annoyances found on the early build (such as not being able to search terms with spaces) but it was already addressed by the developer with version 1.1. So if you think your Notification Center could use some extra functionality, we recommend you grab WeeSearch from Cydia under BigBoss repo for FREE.
Before you can hope to use this tweak, you will of course need to jailbreak your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch to iOS 5. Fortunately, we have the following guides to help you out. For tethered jailbreaks, refer to our Redsn0w tutorial here. And if want to convert your tethered jailbreak to semi-tethered (I don't see any reason why you shouldn't), just follow our iOS 5 semi-tethered jailbreak guide here.Contact Us for News Tips, Corrections and Feedback
