Unlocked iPhone 4S Becomes Available for US Customers in November

AsĀ  you all know, the current hot thing right now in the world of tech is the iPhone 4S. As mentioned on our previous report, folks who are eager to get their hands on the new iPhone can now place their pre-order through Apple's online shop. And if you happen to be one of the eager customers of the iPhone 4S, you would have spotted an option that would let you buy an unlocked iPhone. But not today however because such option won't be available until November.

iPhone 4S
Yes, much like the iPhone 4, a factory unlocked iPhone 4S will eventually be made available by Apple in the United States but not much details have been provided with regards to it. Interestingly enough, customers from the UK are now able to place pre-orders for unlocked iPhone 4S. US customers who are looking to buy an unlocked iPhone 4S will have to settle with GSM service because it won't support CDMA-based carriers such as Verizon Wireless or Sprint.

One of the features of the iPhone 4S is the fact that it is now a dual band phone which supports both GSM and CDMA networks making it a "world phone." But as it turns out if you buy the iPhone 4S for a specific network (CDMA or GSM), it consequently locks your device to that specific carrier. So for instance, you can't buy an iPhone 4S under Sprint or Verizon and then later switch to AT&T whenever you feel like.

However with regards to roaming, it seems that such restrictions are not applicable. Apple said that if you choose to sign-up with AT&T as your wireless carrier, while you are still locked with using GSM cellular technology for voice and data services, you can still pretty much use the same device internationally as it supports over 200 carriers worldwide. On the other hand if you are going with Sprint or Verizon, your device will utilize CDMA cellular technology for voice and data services but the good thing is it still can be used internationally. You will just have to use the provided GSM micro-sim which then enables your iPhone 4S to work on international GSM networks.

If you choose AT&T as your wireless carrier, your iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S will use only GSM cellular technology for voice and data services, and it can roam internationally on 200 GSM carriers around the world.

If you choose Sprint or Verizon Wireless as your wireless carrier, your iPhone 4 will use only CDMA cellular technology for voice and data services. An iPhone 4S activated on Sprint or Verizon Wireless will use CDMA technology too, but it also has the ability to roam internationally on GSM networks using the provided GSM micro-SIM.

So for US customers, will this be enough for you to hold off on purchasing the iPhone 4S? Keep in mind that purchasing a factory unlocked iPhone 4S means that its price won't be subsidized due to the lack of a carrier contract. So be ready to fork out at least $649-$849 whenever it becomes available at around November.
