Unlock iPhone 4 on iOS 5 Final Using Gevey SIM [How-to Guide]

In case you have missed it, Apple just released its highly anticipated update to its mobile operating system iOS, the iOS 5. Now if you are using Gevey SIM to unlock your iPhone 4, you might be wondering if the SIM will work on the iOS 5? Well as it turns out, you can unlock your iPhone 4 using Gevey SIM, you just need to follow the instructions we've detailed here and you're good to go.

Gevey SIM

Before Updating to iOS 5:

DO NOT upgrade to iOS 5 using the stock firmware from Apple. Doing so will cause your iPhone 4 to lose its unlock by upgrading its unlockable baseband. You don't want that of course. Instead of using the stock iOS 5 firmware, we will be cooking our own iOS 5 custom firmware using the latest version of Redsn0w which we will be using to upgrade our iPhone 4 to in order to preserve your unlockable baseband. This way we can use Gevey SIM to unlock your device after the upgrade. Just follow this mini guide first:

  • Download the latest version of Redsn0w (0.9.9b5), which has a new feature that lets you create custom IPSWs. Currently available for Mac only but we'll make sure to update this post once the Windows version is made available. Download Redsn0w (0.9.9b5) for Mac here.
  • Launch Redsn0w and click "Extras" from the main menu and then select "Custom IPSW". Redsn0w will now create the custom IPSW for you. For iOS 5 IPSW download links, click here.
  • Once that's done, enter "Pwned DFU" mode through Redsn0w's "Extras" option.
  • After that restore to the custom firmware we've created earlier using iTunes 10.5 (download links here).
  • Now you can use Gevey SIM to unlock your device.

Steps on How to Unlock iPhone 4 on iOS 5 Final Using Gevey SIM:

  1. Navigate to Settings » General » Network and turn OFF 3G. Make sure to keep Cellular Data and Data Roaming option ON. Also see to it that there is NO unofficial SIM present in your iPhone 4 SIM tray during this step.

Update #1: For those having issues in getting their Gevey SIM to work with the iOS 5, try the steps mentioned by Vivek or by Kiril. They sure seem to get the Gevey working real nice on iOS 5. Be sure to thank them. :D

Update #2: If the above methods did not work for you, try the Alternative Way mentioned in this pastie to get the Gevey working. Thanks to @deefilippi for the compilation & w2no for mentioning it.

I went ahead and parted with the money to purchase a factory unlock (www.ifactoryunlock.com) after I updated my iOS in December. I'm just happy not to have to play cat and mouse with the updates. Money is tight for some folk so I understand. Now if I want to jailbreak I can...update when something cool comes out...I can.

I know it doesn't help anybody on AT&T etc because nobody can factory unlock those again yet. But if you can factory unlock, just do it if your budget allows. That being said I totally hated the Gevey. Mine broke when I was out of the country so I was up the creek without a paddle.

I had the gevey card on iOS4 and upgraded to 5 witout knoing that I need to worry about the jailbreak and now I cant get it to work with iOS 5. Any suggestions?

      Hi,

  • Elyaas

    • http://jaxov.com/ JackLord

First of all, iPhone 4 04.10.01 baseband is unlockable using Gevey. There can be two reasons behind the issue you are facing:

      1. Gevey SIM spoof your IMSI and ICCID to unlock your iPhone. There is a possibility that your operator is cross-checking both values to discourage those iPhone users who are unlocking their iPhone (Ilegally in the eyes of Apple). Secondly, Apple might have introduced the new check in iOS 5.0.1 which validates IMSI and ICCID with ur carrier after certain time.

      2. The Gevey SIM interposer could be faulty.

Best way to check? Downgrade iOS 4.3.x and u'll get answer to the both points above.

Hello Mr. Jacklord, I have upgraded to 5.0.1 from 4.3.5 by mistake last night. Now I am unable to use it, it was unlocked by a gevey sim. And now I want to downgrade it to its original version so can you kindly suggest me how can I downgrade it to 4.x.x?

        Thank you

        • hy

  • nisarawan

I have an iphone 4 with Gevey SIM and i am trying to update it to ios 5

I have made the custom IPSW using Redsnow but when i am restoring it to Custom IPSW i am getting the error 3194

    Can anyone help please ?

    • http://jaxov.com/ Jacklord

      @nisarawan Hi,

      Try reading this: http://bit.ly/qVGQaq

      Hope that helps!

      • NisarAwan

        @Jacklord
        Many thanks for your reply

I visited the link in your post. As far as i understand from the link i need to have cydia to solve error 3194 but i could not find cydia installed at my iphone 4

Currently I am using Gevey SIM to use my iphone4, does it mean my iphone4 is not jailbroken and i have to jailbreak it first to get Cydia or is there a download link for cydia???

Please help me solve the problem

  • Unlockme

Will downgrading version 5.0 to 4.3.5 change the BB from 4.11.08 to 4.10.01 allowing you to use Gevey Card or others. Can you suggest jailbreak that doesn't require me to connect to computer every time to boot it up?

    Thanks

    • http://jaxov.com/ Jacklord

      @Unlockme Hi,

Downgrading will not cause your baseband to downgrade. Looks like you are looking for an untethered jailbreak. If you want the latest untethered jailbreak, it is with iOS 4.3.3. Although there are reports that an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 / iOS 5.0.1 is already close to release.

  • keko717

so.... Is there any other way to unlock it now? What shall I do now?

  • keko717

After unlocking my iPhone4 using gevey card, i upgradet it using iTunes and now my phone is locked again. how can i unlock it again? please help...

    • http://jaxov.com/ Jacklord

      @keko717 Hi,

I'm afraid you may have lost your Gevey unlock. As a rule of thumb, you should not update to any stock iOS update if you are using Ultrasn0w or Gevey as it will also update your unlockable baseband. You should have updated using a custom firmware.

      • ikes

@Jacklord@keko717 so if i used apple os 5 update mt phone is permanently locked?

        • http://jaxov.com/ Jacklord

          @ikes@keko717 Hi,

As a rule, if you are using an unlock, never update using Apple's stock IPSW or through iTunes. It is always best to upgrade using a custom IPSW to preserve your supported unlockable baseband and have it unlocked after the update.

  • AlvinTran

DOES GEVEY SIM DRAIN BATTERY? BECAUSE IT SEEMS TO BE THE CAUSE OF MY iPHONE 4'S BATTERY DRAINAGE, NO 3D GAMES, FEW APPS RUNNING ON BACKGROUND, JUST SURFING WEB AND CHECKING EMAIL, SOCIAL STUFF FOR ABOUT 5 HOURS AND THE BATTERY GETS TO 30's. HELP.

    • http://jaxov.com/ Jacklord

      @AlvinTran Yes,

It is possible that the Gevey sim causes it but as far as I know, this only happens with counterfeit Gevey SIM. If that is not the case you might want to restore and rejailbreak your device just to be sure. If you are in iOS 5, then it is possible that the problem lies with the OS itself, since iOS 5 is known to have battery drain issues which Apple continues to fix...

      • AlvinTran

@Jacklord @AlvinTran the sim is not counterfeit, because i used the official cydia source to unlock automatically with my ultra sim while on 4.3. The battery was quite terrible previously, but it got even worse when i updated to 5.0, and it doesnt seem to help when updated to 5.0.1. Has anybody experienced this issue?

        • http://jaxov.com/ Jacklord

@AlvinTran iOS 5 really does seem to drain the battery fast, with all its new features. It is actually a common problem, I myself can attest to that.

Supposedly iOS 5.0.1 fixes the issue but not for everyone. Maybe you can try some of fixes we've featured before: http://bit.ly/uk5976 and http://bit.ly/v5Dsgj

        • AlvinTran

@Jacklord well, ive been doing that since updating to ios 5.0, but it doesnt seem to help. On another post, somebody said that they even get about 2 days of heavy usage, but i barely even make it through a day with only surfing the web. Well, i guess the battery improves a bit after updating, but nowhere near 2 days. Thank you anyways.

  • jimmy_135

i have a a iphone 4 on ios 4.2.1 bb 3.10.1 can i upgrade to ios 5.0.1 preserve my baseband and stll use gevey sim? my iphone is locked on at&t carrier usa

    • http://jaxov.com/ Jacklord

@jimmy_135 Yes, you can.. just be sure to use a custom IPSW to preserve your BB.

      • jimmy_135

@Jacklord jacklord can u plz tell me procedure so i can do easily

  • NgaNguyen

hi, my phone 4 stuck on apple logo, can I update it's version to 5.0.1, but still keep the baseband?? and can I still use gevey sim after that to unlock the phone?? thanks

    • AlvinTran

@NgaNguyen If your phone is stuck at the apple logo, reboot it using ibooty and it should work fine. If you have either badeband 3.10.01 or 4.10.01, then you should be fine.

  • Murali Anand

I had trouble getting my gevey supreme to work with 5.0.1 and BB 04.10.01. I would follow all the steps mentioned for getting a gevey to work usually but it would go to No Service.

Finally I followed the steps mentioned here as in.

Enable Cellular Data and Data Roaming while there is NO SIM followed by inserting the gevey SIM interposer and SIM.

and it worked. I am trying to understand what is the relation between having data option turned ON and getting gevey to work?

Does this have to be done every-time phone reboots or we lose coverage?

  • Evicted13

    @Nbhide yes I have ios 5.0.1 baseband 4.10.01

    Hello Pramond!
i think i have damaged my new iphone 4.
i am running ios 5.0 with 4.110** firmware.
i mistakenly jailbreaked it with redsnow using ios 4.3.3
now the phone is in itune recovery mode which i try to rejailbreak with the latest redsnow with my window 7 but it failed to recognize my ipsw file.
i tried to restore with the ios 5.0 i keep getting error 30194.
i uninstalled the new version of itune, bonjour, apple application support, apple updater and installed the previous version of itune 10.4.1 and tried to restore with my tinyumbrella active and pointing at cydia checked.
i did not remember to save my shsh
while restoring i keep getting error 1600 and when i put my phone when the phone is in pwned udf but when try to restore using the normal itune recovery, the phone pops up and hangs in apple logo while trying to restore and trows error 10.
since error 10 is associated with updating my itune, i cant bypass error 3194 and if i manage to bypass error 3194, it keeps giving me error 2005.
i have searched the web and i am crying here.
    please help me....................

    hey
wen r ios 5 gevey sims going 2 launch in india i m watin fr dem
    thanx

    • http://jaxov.com/ Patrick

      Hi,

There seems to be no word regarding a Gevey SIM launch in India. Your best bet is to get them from local online sellers.

  • Jesse

So then there isn't a solution for mms on gevey?

    • http://jaxov.com/ Patrick

      Hi,

I'm afraid so. Gevey always seems to have trouble when it comes to MMS.

  • Jesse Roriguez

hey i was trying to get mms on my phone and it doesnt seem to be working
i have gevey sim on 5.0.1
i cant configure the mms setting
any help with that? i dont have cydia

    • http://twitter.com/pram0dm Pramod

AFAIK, Gevey SIMs always had issues with MMS settings.

  • pim

    Hello,

I used this to update my iphone 4. But I can't set a personal hotspot and i was wondering if this comes through sam? It's possible for me to set a hotspot with my subscription so i don't understand it. can you help me?

    • http://twitter.com/pram0dm Pramod

It doesn't come via SAM. Look for the Personal Hotspot option under Settings>>General>>Network

  • gibsonpool

    I have a locked iphone4 running 5.0.1 Firmware 04.11.08
Can I unlock my phone with a Gevey Sim by using Redsn0w (0.9.9b5) to customize my firmware or is it to late because I updated my phone to 5.0.1?

    • http://twitter.com/pram0dm Pramod

Nope. Any BB with versions 04.11.xx & above aren't compatible with the Gevey & therefore cannot unlocked at the moment.

  • AJ

WILL THE SIM WORK WITH IPHONE 3GS VERSION 4.3.5 BASEBAND 05.15.02

    • http://twitter.com/pram0dm Pramod

No, its only for the iPhone 4's.

  • Jesse Roriguez

yeah i figured i just contacted the seller,

yes the ip4 running ios 5 is gevey compatible

    • http://twitter.com/pram0dm Pramod

Okies, talk to the seller & try getting it replaced with a proper working Gevey. Also, read the updates down at the bottom of the post & try to follow the steps as described to unlock using the Gevey on iOS 5.

  • Jesse Roriguez

i recently just got that gevey sim in the mail
and it says ultra in the middle it doesnt seem to be working at all
i have an iphone on iso 4.3.1 and it does t read the gevey sim at all
even with furious mods or without

then i tryed it on my already unlocked gevy iphone 4 ios 5
and it wont read it either
i have no cluse what the name of the gevey sim on my ios 5 iphone 4 is

    any help?

    • http://twitter.com/pram0dm Pramod

Is the modem FW version of your iP4 that's currently running iOS 5 Gevey compatible? Also I believe what you just got in the mail is a duplicate one because only Applenberry's authentic Gevey SIMs are detected by FuriousMod.

  • Jesse

Can you send me a link to where I can purchase a gevey

    • http://twitter.com/pram0dm Pramod

Check you local mobile outlets / eBay. Or get it from http://www.applenberry.com. I don't have any specific links / sites though. :(

      • joedeanna

        i have 2 extra gevey sim....wanna buy?

  • Jesse Roriguez

does it matter what kind of gevey sim it is?
because i hear alot of talk about gevey sim, ultra gevey and supreme gevey sim.
    is there a difference?

    thank greatly appreciated

    • http://twitter.com/pram0dm Pramod

Every Gevey SIM out there works & unlocks just fine like any other version. They differ probably the way in which they are able to retain the GSM / data signals after a reboot w/o the need to redo the 112 steps manually & so on.

  • Girish

is thr any gevey sim tht can unlock ios 5 on iphone 4 or 4s.. and is thr a untethered jailbreak available

    • http://twitter.com/pram0dm Pramod
