Jailbreak iOS 5 Semi-Tethered on Your iPhone, iPad & iPod Touch [Complete Guide]

As you all know, Apple's latest mobile operating system, the iOS 5 is now out in the wild for iDevice owners to enjoy. One of the main concerns that arises with jailbreak fans when iOS 5 was released is if an untethered jailbreak will ever be possible. iOS 5 was jailbreakable right off the bat using tools such as Redsn0w but it is only limited to tethered jailbreak which is hardly ideal for some people. But now while the Chronic Dev Team works on the untethered iOS 5 jailbreak, a tweak from Cydia surfaced that allows semi-tethered jailbreak on the iOS 5.

iOS-5-Semi-Tethered

So What's a Semi-Tethered Jailbreak?

A tethered jailbreak provides the full functionalities of a jailbroken device but each time your device gets shut down or reboots, you will need to connect it into a computer and boot it to tethered mode using a program like Redsn0w. With a semi-tethered jailbreak, connecting your device and tethered booting it into its jailbroken state will not be necessary, sounds just like an untethered jailbreak right? Well not quite, once your device gets shut down or reboots, about 99% of your jailbreak tweaks and apps won't work until you run it over Redsn0w again. A semi-tethered jailbreak at least makes your device usable as opposed to tethered ones that gets stuck in the Apple boot logo. This is very useful if you are on the road and your device dies out on you.

What Functions Can / Can't Be Done When you Are Using a Semi-Tethered Jailbreak?

According to BigBoss:

  • Can use phone, sms (text messages)
  • Can use every other stock app on iphone.
  • Cannot use mobile safari
  • Can use other appstore web browsers such as atomic web browser
  • Cannot use mail app. You could install a gmail app from appstore or such instead.
  • You cannot use any jailbreak tweak, app, cydia until you boot tethered.
  • While in the semitether booted state, you should not add a jailbreak ios5 notification such as sbsettings to notifications during this state or your device will be stuck in a respring loop until you get home to “boot tethered”.

Supported Devices:

  • iPhone 4
  • iPhone 3GS
  • iPhone 3GS New Bootrom
  • iPad 1
  • iPod Touch 4G
  • iPod Touch 3G

Steps to Semi-Tether Jailbreak iOS 5 into Your iDevice Using Semi-Tether Tweak:

  1. First you must install iOS 5 in your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch (IPSW download links here) and tether jailbreak it using Redsn0w (Read our full guide here).
  2. redsn0w-Jailbreak-iOS-5-Semi-Tether

  3. Once you have successfully jailbroken your device, launch Cydia and tap the Manage tab below.
  4. Cydia-Manage-Tab-Jailbreak-iOS-5-Semi-Tether

  5. Tap Sources to access your Cydia repositories.
  6. Cydia-Sources_Jailbreak-iOS-5-Semi-Tether

  7. Tap Edit on the top right corner of the screen and then tap Add found on the top left corner.
  8. Cydia-Add-Source-Jailbreak-iOS-5-Semi-Tethered

  9. Now you will be asked for the Cydia/APT URL. Simply add the following repository: http://thebigboss.org/semitether.
  10. Add-SemiTether-Tweak-Jailbreak-iOS-5-Semi-Tethered

  11. Cydia will then download the package so give it a few seconds. Tap Return to Cydia and tap the Search tab and input "SemiTether" (without quotes) into the search field.
  12. Search-SemiTether-Jailbreak-iOS-5-Semi-Tethered

  13. Tap Install at the top right corner and reboot your device. Once that's done, you should be able to reboot your device without running it through Redsn0w for a tethered boot.
  14. Install-SemiTether-Jailbreak-iOS-5-Semi-Tethered

  15. To restore your jailbreak tweaks and apps, run it through Redsn0w by clicking Extras > Just Boot. Just follow the instructions hereafter.
  16. redsn0w-Boot-Tethered

Congratulations! Your have now semi-tethered jailbroken iOS 5 on your iDevice. It is not exactly the untethered jailbreak that we have been clamoring for but we believe it is the next best thing. And we are taking this as a sign of the good things to come with regards to an iOS 5 untethered solution. We are having our fingers crossed.

      @adamfoul Hi,

Yes, it does work with Sn0wbreeze too, just make sure that you have jailbroken your device using at least the 2.8b10 version of Sn0wbreeze.. After installing Semi-tether be sure to tether boot your device using iBooty.

      Hope that helps!!

By using either Redsn0w / Sn0wbreeze for your jailbreaks. If your not yet on iOS 5, you can use Sn0wbreeze to both update & JB at the same time. Read http://bit.ly/qWieKu.

No, I don’t know actually, but the only app which comes as an idea of this, Downloads. It was automatically deleted when syncing, so uninstalling it is impossible.

Yes I understand that, but as I said, I don’t use any apps/tweaks from there, only Activator, but it is not because of this.

Then do you know what’s causing this issue? If you do so, uninstall it.

It can’t be Cydia app, because I am using just two things from there: Installous (+AppSync) and Activator, which is really not the reason of this problem.. Really the only idea, which is possible, is Downloads app.

By Cydia app, I meant the apps / tweaks that were installed on your device via Cydia.

Do you have any idea how to fix that? Or the only way is to re-jailbreak it?:/

Its very hard to tell exactly which app / tweak could be causing such an issue. Reinstall the iOS & keep an eye on what you install from Cydia.

I am not sure, but it could happened after “Downloads”, but I don’t know if it is its fault. But after that this happens with all apps.

    •
      Pramod5 years, 1 month ago

Yep & since you also mentioned that it happens after sometime after you have started using your device on 2 separate iOS installs, it definitely should be some incompatible Cydia apps / tweaks that’s causing this issue.

My computer is already authorized. And the library is really not empty. As I said, it was working great as it should be at first, it happened after few months of using on iOS 4.3.3, and probably after one week on iOS 5.

    •

Is it happening after you have installed a particular app? Because some app (probably a jailbroken one) might seem to be causing this issue right after you have installed them both the times (on iOS 4.3.3 & iOS 5).

My iPhone 3GS is successfully jailbroken with untethered, but I have the problem with syncing. For few days everything was okey, but now iTunes deletes newly downloaded apps. I didn’t change any settings, and the same was with iOS 4.3.3, everything was ok for few months, and later it started to delete apps, but I was waiting for iOS 5 so I didn’t do anything to fix that. What it could be? Thank you.

You need to Authorize your computer via iTunes & make sure that the library to which your syncing your apps with already has them. Seems like your library is empty & hence it tries to delete your already existing apps from your iPhone.

When is ios 5 untethered for ipod touch coming out? Do you know?
I cannot live with any kind of tethered jailbreak

    •
      Pramod5 years, 1 month ago

We all are waiting patiently for the same. For an iPT, the semi-tethered is the best that’s currently out there.

    Nop. Not Good
We Need A Fully Untethered jailbreak.
We waited around two weeks for untethered jailbreak so we can wait 2 more weeks for real UNTETHERED.

The only bad news about is that there is a conflict between this tweak and AppSync…

When you sat cidya tweaks wont work that includes ultrasn0w as well right? I mean if i am a unlocker then with this i wont get to make calls as well?

    •
      Pramod5 years, 1 month ago

That’s right. Ultrasn0w always requires a tethered boot to work. You will not be able to place any calls / use any kind of phone functionality after the semi-tethered boot if your an Ultrasn0w unlocker.
