Jailbreak iOS 5 Final on iPhone, iPad & iPod Touch Using Redsn0w 0.9.9b4 [How-to Guide]

As you all know, iOS 5 is finally out for the public's download pleasure. Now we are pretty sure that most jailbreak enthusiasts would hesitate upgrading to iOS 5 since you guys aren't sure if it can be jailbroken. Well, thanks to the jailbreak community, iOS 5 final version can be jailbroken using Redsn0w, granted that you do not mind a tethered solution for now.

Redsn0w Logo
According to a tweet by MuscleNerd, Redsn0w 0.9.9b4 is perfectly capable of jailbreaking iOS 5 final version on all A4 iDevices. So if you are planning to upgrade to iOS 5 but still concerned whether you can jailbreak it or not, don't worry because you are pretty much on the clear now. Jailbreaking the iOS 5 final version using Redsn0w is very similar to the procedure that we covered for jailbreaking iOS 5 GM. Do not worry because with the new Redsn0w, the process is easier than ever.

Before You Proceed:

  • This tutorial is not applicable for the iPad 2 or the new iPhone 4S
  • As mentioned, this is a tethered jailbreak which means you will need to reconnect your device to your PC or Mac in order to boot it into tethered jailbroken state using Redsn0w.

Steps to Jailbreak iOS 5.0 Final Using Redsn0w 0.9.9b4:

  1. First of course, you need to download the necessary files for this jailbreak: The iOS 5 IPSW file, iTunes 10.5 installer and Redsn0w 0.9.9b4. Download links for the iOS 5 IPSW can be found here, for iTunes 10.5 get it here for both Windows and Mac and finally Redsn0w 0.9.9b4 for Windows and Mac.
  2. Connect your iDevice into the computer and upgrade to iOS 5 final version through iTunes 10.5.
  3. Launch Redsn0w 0.9.9b4 and to initiate the jailbreaking process, press the "Jailbreak" that's found on the main menu of Redsn0w. The program will ask you to place your device into DFU mode, so be sure that your device is plugged in and turned OFF before clicking Next. Just follow the on-screen instructions to put your device to DFU Mode.
  4. Redsn0w-0.9.9b4a-Main-Menu
    Redsn0w-0.9.9b4a-DFU-Mode

  5. After Redsn0w has detected your device in DFU Mode, it will now proceed to jailbreak your device. You can now let the program do all the work for you, so you are pretty much done here.

How to Boot to into Tethered Mode:

Since this is a tethered jailbreak, you will need to boot your device using Redsn0w each time it gets shutdown or loses battery power. To do that, just select "Extras" and then "Just Boot" option. You will be prompted by Redsn0w to put your device in DFU mode and once you've done it, your device will boot into tethered jailbreak mode.
Redsn0w-0.9.9b4a-Tethered-Boot

Note to Users with Gevey SIM or Ultrasn0w Unlock:

Upgrading to iOS 5 using stock firmware is NOT RECOMMENDED because it will cause you to lose your unlock by upgrading your unlockable baseband. What you need to do instead is use the latest version of Redsn0w to create a custom firmware of iOS 5 which will preserve your baseband. This way you will be able to unlock your device using Ultrasn0w or Gevey SIM.

  • Just click "Extras" from the main Redsn0w menu and then select "Custom IPSW". Redsn0w will create the custom IPSW for you.
  • Once that's done, enter "Pwned DFU" mode again through Redsn0w's "Extras" option.
  • After that restore to the custom firmware using iTunes 10.5.
  • Now you can use Gevey SIM or Ultrasn0w to unlock your device.

As an alternate option for those who rely on an unlock, can use Sn0wbreeze v2.8b8 to jailbreak iOS 5 final on their iPhone 4/3GS and at the same time preserve its baseband.

What’s the Semi-Tethered JB supposed to do to my 5.0.1 (4.11.08 BB) iphone?
Is it supposed to jailbreak, install cydia AND UNLOCK????
Cuz my iphone 4 is jailbroken, with cydia installed perfectly and semi-tethered BUT i still get INVALID SIM or even somtimes NO SERVICE….
    What could that mean????

    •
      Pesmerga4 years, 5 months ago

      Hi,

A semi-tethered jailbreak is simply jailbreaking your phone and installing Cydia. It is not yet unlocked. You will still have to unlock it via Ultrasn0w.

No worries now i just restored it and it started working again, proberly jailbreak it again a bit later. Also what is TU?

    •
      Pramod4 years, 10 months ago

Tiny Umbrella was what I meant by TU.

    kai4 years, 10 months ago

hey again, i successfully jailbroke my device but after downloading things from cydia it said i needed to reboot so i turned the phone off and tried to enter into dfu mode, the screen has gone completely black. however in redsnow its not recognising that ive put it into dfu mode, dyou know what the problem is? Im thinking of restoring it in itunes

    thanks

    •
      Pramod4 years, 10 months ago

Well by any chance, did you restore your device to iOS 5.x with TU running in the background?

    hey,

Im trying to jailbreak my 5.0.1 iphone 3gs, this may sound silly but do i use the ipsw that is used to jailbreak an iphone 5? if so do i just follow whats been said in this guide

    thanks

    •
      Pramod4 years, 10 months ago

Yep, that’s correct. Point Redsn0w to iOS 5.0 instead to jailbreak your device. Use the latest version of Redsn0w 0.9.9b8.

My Friends are our guide and the best of all we thank you much I did not want to upgrade the IOS 5.0 and updated the baseband to version 04.11.08 does have way more back to the old version that was 04:10:01? Because I know a lot of despair and difficulties can not I use my iPhone 4 in the net of my country would appreciate assistance with respect to a point. thank you

    •
      Pramod4 years, 10 months ago

Not possible because a BB update is a permanent change unlike an iOS downgrade.

  •
Eduard Garcia4 years, 10 months ago

yes, thank you very much. will update you what will happen after i use a new gevey.

  •
Eduard Garcia4 years, 11 months ago

    Hi Pramod,
about my “no sim” issue, i have tried your link about the updates.
I tried all the procedures but i failed. Right after it boots up, it will already post the message, “no sim card installed”. was that mean that it cannot read my sim and gevey sim? what should i do? i will highly appreciate any help. thanks!

    •
      Pramod4 years, 11 months ago

Probably try getting your Gevey SIM replaced with a new one. That should help.

    Hi

I can use my device now as tethered Jb of version 4.3.5 and bb of 4.10.01. but my prob is my gevey sim isn’t working anymore with it. it says “no sim”? what should i do in order to use my sim again and work as normal like making calls and text? Should i buy new gevey?

    thanks!

Hi, i just wanted to say thanks for everything, i have managed to jailbreak it and now know how to boot it up again, what with it being tethered and all. Anyway thanks for your time and help and also i wish you well :)

But its stuck on the apple logo with no way for me to turn it off, wouldnt i need to turn the iphone off in order to do the “Just Boot now” option? If not how would i go about fixing this?
    Thanks for your patience.

    •
      Pramod4 years, 11 months ago

You need not shut down your device for the tethered boot. Go into the Extras option of Redsn0w & choose the Just Boot option to boot it back up by following the onscreen instructions.

  •

Thanks for the reply, i have managed to jailbreak my iphone now but i just rebooted it after installing an app and it is frozen on the apple screen what should i do now?

    •
      Pramod4 years, 11 months ago

You need to boot your device tethered each time you shut down / reboot your device using Redsn0w. It is called a tethered JB for a reason. :D

  •

i have just found out that my iphone 3gs has a new bootrom in it (Its showing up with 359.3.2) will i still be able to do jailbreak it, if not is there an alternative to jailbreaking?

    •
      Pramod4 years, 11 months ago

Yes, you can still use Redsn0w 0.9.9 for a tethered JB.

  •
    Stefan4 years, 11 months ago

I am an iphone 3gs baseband 6.15, ios 4.3.3 user so i read somewhere that redsnow (for windows) still not able to create custom ipsw. This means i should use snowbreeze?

  •
    bob4 years, 11 months ago

thanks for the quick reply, how will i know whether or not i have managed to put it into dfu mode, aswell as that if i don’t manage to get it done in the instruction times will it still continue to jailbreak or will it recognize that it is not in dfu mode. Sorry if these are stupid questions, just need to make sure.

    •
      Pramod4 years, 11 months ago

If you see a pitch black screen, your in a DFU mode. Redsn0w will tell you if it was successful in putting your device into a DFU mode or not.

  •

    Thanks for the replies Pramod.

Just for information, the link with the information I put about the problem with hotspot is http://www.iphone4jailbreak.org/upgrade-ios-5-iphone-4-preserve-baseband.html.

Look at the comments. It is there.

    Tks

    •
      Pramod4 years, 11 months ago

Mhm, saw them. But not everyone is having this issue. Just a few.

  •
    Hangar184 years, 11 months ago

    Ok Pramod. I got it.

I have an IP4 running with Gevey and with hotspot enabled exactly the way you pointed out, but as I read in other foruns that in iOS 5 even with the APN options configured it simply disappear from the menu and it´s impossible to enable it. That´s why I was worried to upgrade even with the BB preservation.

Did you already see any iOS5 running with Gevey and with hotspot enable? If I have this confirmation than I will update my system.

    •
      Pramod4 years, 11 months ago

I really do not know where you read something like that about the Gevey. Its upto you to decide whether to update to iOS 5 or not. Also, I have nothing with me right now to confirm the same.

does this work if i updated my iphone4 to ios5 and now its asking my to activate it again but i have a t-mobile sim card can i just jail break it or would that not work if its not activated? THANK YOU

    •
      Pramod4 years, 11 months ago

If you have the legit carrier SIM, pop it in & connect the same to iTunes. If not, JB your device.

  •
    Hangar184 years, 11 months ago

    Hi,

In one of your previous answers you stated that hotspot is still present in iOS 5 using Gevey as long as the carrier supports the same, but I saw several reports that in iOS 5.0 running with GEvey the hotspot features simply disappear (probably because the roaming).

Is is true? And if it is, is there any possible solution on the way, that you know of?

    Thx

    •
      Pramod4 years, 11 months ago

Not true at all. If it has worked before, it will on the iOS 5 as well. You can enable the hotspot feature in iPhone 4 (Unlocked using Gevey sim) by going to Settings -> General -> Network -> Cellular Data Network and scroll down till the end. There, you will find Internet Tethering APN option. Just put in your service providers APN and you are ready to go on tethering. Remember that this works only if your carrier supports Internet Tethering.

  •
Eduard Garcia4 years, 11 months ago

but my device is already JB, as i have said, it suddenly did not recognize my gevey sim, it says “no sim” ..do i have to buy a new gevey just to activate my carrier, even if it is tethered?

    •
      Pramod4 years, 11 months ago

It is not an activation issue. Its more of a Gevey issue. Have you tried using another carrier SIM to see if its behaving in the same manner?

  •
Eduard Garcia4 years, 11 months ago

    Hi!
Would just like to ask why is that my gevey sim is not working after tethered jailbreak to 4.3.5 with bb 4.10.01. it says “no sim” .. i can’t go on the process of turning it on/off again because it’s tethered. should i buy new gevey? will gevey supreme unlock my phone again? even if it’s tethered? thank you very much!

    •
      Pramod4 years, 11 months ago

Doesn’t really matter because your device is still tethered irrespective of which Gevey you use. You can wait until an untethered comes by. Till then, don’t JB your device i.e if your absolutely sure that the same Gevey worked for you when your device wasn’t jailbroken.

Thanks Pramod, but I am not given that option. My OS is Windows XP. If I run it in any of the compatibility modes available, redsn0w just crashes at the Select IPSW stage. Before that, it crashed at the uploading first stages part.

What’s the use of iOS 5 IPSW? I had already updated my ip4 to iOS 5 through iTunes. Is that for updating manually using iTunes? Based on the jailbreak procedure above, iOS 5 IPSW is not needed. So can i proceed the jailbreak now since i already updated my idevice to ios 5?

  •

I jailbroke my iphone4 tonight after installing iOS5. I had previously done it with 4.3.5 and had no problems but now my springboard will not work. It’s constantly in ‘safe mode’ and crashes. Even re-booting in dfu mode or recovering does not fix this. Any ideas as to how i can sort this problem? Thanks.

    •
      Pramod4 years, 11 months ago

You have installed some tweak / app from Cydia that is still not compatible with the iOS 5. Uninstall them & everything should work just fine.

You need to reflash your BB with the iPad BB because currently your not on the iPad BB. Update your BB back to the iPad BB via Redsn0w & it should work just fine.

    1) Is “hactivation” possible in IOS 5.0 GM without fully jailbreaking the device?

    2) Does SAM work in IOS 5.0 GM to post “hacktivate” & “jailbreak” to enable push updates?

    3) If I upgrade using RedSn0w preserve my baseband please confirm I can use at&t sim of my brothrs iphone to “activate” ios 5.0 even if I am not in USA with no at&t coverage

    4) If for some reason my brothers AT&T sim doesnt work can I downgrade to 4.3.5 without “hactivating” on IOS 5.0 GM using my SHSH blobs and than “hactivate” ios 4.3.5 using RedSn0w and SAM

Thanks so much.. I am almost there.

    •
      Pramod4 years, 11 months ago

This conversation is definitely getting too long esp when I have provided you all the necessary answers.
      1. No.
      2. Yes.
      3. Yes (Goodness, this is what I have been answering all along.)
      4. It will work. Give it a try first atleast. If it doesn’t, then Yes.

  •
    iphonemaster4 years, 11 months ago

I think there is some confusion here…. please clarify:

    1) My phone was already activated using a legit at&t sim on 4.3.5. If I upgrade to 5.0 GM using RedSn0w do I loose my activation and need to either reactivate using at&t or hactivate?

    2) If I use RedSn0w to upgrade my phone using custom IPSW and if I get the “activation” error cant I revert to 4.3.5 using my saved SHSH… and why wont my Gevey work? Isnt the whole point of using RedSn0w was to preserve my baseband?

    Thnx

One last mute point. I do have an AT&T sim that came with my brothers iPhone. Will I be able to use this SIM to “activate” my device post upgrade to IOS 5 even if :

    a) I am not in United States and AT&T is not available in my country

    b) The sim has been used to activate my brothers iPhone. Can same sim be used to activate another phone?

    •
      Pramod4 years, 11 months ago

      1. Yep. If you do not have the legit SIM, you need to hacktivate.
      2. What activation error are you talking about? I already told you that you will need to JB / hacktivate to get across that screen if you do not have the AT&T SIM. Even if you downgrade back, its again a fresh install & it will again ask you for activation. Your Gevey will still work as long as your preserving the BB.

      a) & b) Yes, you can use the same SIM as long as it also came locked with an iP4.

  •
    SupersonicJak4 years, 11 months ago

Ok, let me get this in the open, Im a tool. And not a very useful one.

Basically without getting into too much detail of how i got in this mess.

I have a 3GS, that in stock iOS5, still has the ipad baseband, and will not jailbreak.

I do not have SHSH blobs to downgrade.

am I totally screwed or can i fix this?

    (I also need to unlock)

    •
      Pramod4 years, 11 months ago

Apple still signs iOS 4.1. So you can downgrade first to iOS 4.1 using a custom IPSW & then flash your BB back to the iPad BB using Redsn0w followed by a JB. Use Sn0wbreeze v2.1 http://bit.ly/rq4MtY to create one & restore to it.

  •
    iphonemaster4 years, 11 months ago

Thanks for the response. Few follow up questions:

    1) I have an “activated” phone that I purchased, however I do not have the original at&t sim as I am not in United States, therefore if I upgrade using RedSn0w to 5.0 will I get the dreaded “activation emergency call screen” requiring an at&t sim card? Or since my device is already activated I wont run into this problem?

    2) If god forbid I run into the problem requiring “activation” can I use my SHSH to go back to 4.3.5 and can you point me to an article on how to do that with RedSn0w

    3) My understanding is that if my device is already activated and I upgrade to ios 5 using custom IPSW by using RedSn0w I will preserve my baseband. And by not explicitly jailbreaking I wont require a tethered loging. Please re-answer as your original answer was not clear to me.

Lastly, thank you so much for helping folks like me by giving your precious time. Thank you so very much!

    •
      Pramod4 years, 11 months ago

      1. Yes, you definitely will need the legit carrier SIM to officially activate your device. If you do not have one, you will be forced to JB your device to get across it. Remember that activation is something that Apple asks you to do right before you begin using your device. So, you will definitely see this kind of message for any kind of restores / fresh installs of the iOS itself.
      2. Yes, you can like how you would downgrade to any other iOS version. By using a custom IPSW. But, your Gevey will not work anymore until an updated Gevey for the iOS 5 arrives which could probably take weeks if not months to come by.
      3. Yep, that’s right. But as I mentioned in my first point, you will still need that legit SIM to officially activate your device if you do not choose to JB.

I have a factory replacement at&t iphone 4 with 4.3.5 and baseband 4.10.01. The phone is already unlocked. I plan to unlock it using Gevey sim. Please help me with few questions:

    1) Which upgrade method should I use? Redsnow -> Extras -> Custom IPSW or Snowbreeze? Will Redsnow preserve my baseband?

    2) Which software is preffered to save SHSH, ifaith or TU?

    3) Would I be able to use iFaith or TU to revert to 4.3.5 and my baseband if accidently my baseband gets upgraded?

    4) If I use Redsnow on an activated device only to create a custom IPSW for Gevey unlock and dont jailbreak it, do I still have to boot tethered or can I boot normally and use my Gevey for unlock

    5) Is IOS 5 upgrade safe if I follow the steps listed in this article from an unlock prespective or is it not worth the hassle

    6) I love Personal Hotspot feature, just want to ensure that feature is available and not hidden in IOS 5

    Thanx

    •
      Pramod4 years, 11 months ago

      1. Read this post http://bit.ly/p2VAxx. Both Redsn0w & Sn0wbreeze preserves the BB.
      2. Use Redsn0w’s Submit SHSH option under Extras >> SHSH .
      3. Only your iOS & not your BB because an update to the BB is always permanent.
      4. Nope, unless you explicitly JB your device.
      5. For the unlock, its upto to you to decide that, but for a JB, absolutely not worth it at the moment being tethered.
      6. Its still there as long as your carrier supports the same.

Nope. The iP3G can’t be updated to iOS 5.

okay! i just wanted to clarify whether the update would be possible at the time an untethered jb is released for it.. so let me just wait for it then..
how do i preserve my bb? just by not updating any version of the apps installed?

    •
      Pramod4 years, 11 months ago

By always restoring to a custom IPSW no matter which iOS version are you on.

  •
    Spryte4 years, 11 months ago

    still not working … 3194 and 3002 error it’s all what i get .. :(

    •
      Pramod4 years, 11 months ago

Update to iTunes 10.3.5 first & also fix your hosts file by removing any reference to Cydia’s servers.

Yes, I’m doing the JB on XP SP 3… my internet is not fully connected because it’s blocked and I have to use a proxy. I will try again with a Vista computer fully connected to the internet.

    Thanks

i am on bb 6.15 unlocked via ultrasnow.. but dont want to get into a tethered jb… would apple allow the restore to ios 5 without saved blobs, till an untethered jb is released? if not, what step do you recommend for an upgrade to ios5?

    •
      Pramod4 years, 11 months ago

You always can restore to iOS 5 by preserving your BB, but you would definitely need to get it jailbroken to run Ultrasn0w for the unlock which is again a tethered one on the iOS 5.

  •
    Anjum4 years, 11 months ago

so that means i can upgrade too? but then there isnt an untethered jb and unlock available.. so no use i guess..

    •
      Pramod4 years, 11 months ago

There is an unlock for the iOS 5 if your on an Ultrasn0w unlockable BB, but its still a tethered JB at the moment.

    Hi!
I have a iphone 3Gs with new bootroom with the Ipad BB on 4.2.1 and i wonder if i can update to iOS 5 or even better if i can remove the Ipad BB and go back to regular BB?

    •
      Pramod4 years, 11 months ago

Update – Yes, by restoring to a custom IPSW always.
You can’t go back / revert your BB updates as updating to the iPad BB was a permanent change that came with its own sets of risks & consequences.

Thank you! Saved me… Had the exact same problem :)

    Omar4 years, 11 months ago

I upgraded to iOS5 and I can’t jailbreak because redsn0w crashes, is not working by connecting to identify my model or by manually selecting the IPSW manually. It’s crashing when it gets to the uploading first stage.

    •
      Pramod4 years, 11 months ago

Are you running the Redsn0w in an XP SP3 mode? Also, you need to still be connected onto the internet while you run Redsn0w.

  •
    Omar4 years, 11 months ago

Hi, I have an iPhone 4 that I updated from 4.3.3 with jb on it. Now that I’m running redsn0w after getting the message uploading first stage redsn0w just crashes. I’ve rebooted and also tried it using the firmware selected manually and it keeps crashing.

    Any ideas?

Is your iP4 already jailbroken? What are you exactly trying to achieve here?

  •
    Dainius4 years, 11 months ago

Does the new redsn0w have the 6.15 bb flash option? If so, I can’t find it: I have an iPhone 3GS with old 4.x.x unflashed baseband preserved…but not yet flashed to 6.1.5. And I can’t download as per your instructions to 4.x.x.

How would I go about flashing it?

    -D

    •
      Pramod4 years, 11 months ago

You still can flash it to the iPad BB using the latest Redsn0w. But first, make sure that your aware of the consequences & only then proceed with the unlock. Its under the JB options tab of Redsn0w.

thanks dude.. i done my fone will reflashing ipad baseband on my iphone 3gs…
but now i using ios 5 final.. but it since not stable for iphone 3gs ipad baseband… cause when i use wifi or 3g for internet it since like.. searching for network all the time, when i enter to cydia sources.. any suggestion?

    •
      Pramod4 years, 11 months ago

You need to reflash your BB to the iPad BB. Once done, install the latest Ultrasn0w 1.2.4 from Cydia to get it unlocked on iOS 5. This is important.

i have a different problem. i upgraded my iphone 4 to ios 5 and then i jailbroke it using the newest version of redsn0w. after the jailbreaking process was done i had the cydia app but its just blank white icon and when i tap on it nothing happens. also i cant use the safari or the mail app anymore.
can you tell me what the problem is? i already restored it with itunes once and rejailbroke it with the same result… :( help!!

    •
      Pramod4 years, 11 months ago

You need to boot it tethered always using the Just Boot Tethered Now option from Redsn0w each time you reboot / shut down your device. Remember, the JB is still a tethered one.

    Sorry i forgot … i have an iPhone 4 with 4.3.5 jailbreak

    •
      Pramod4 years, 11 months ago

Doesn’t matter. You should be able to update / restore to iOS 5 by now.

    Thanks Pramod,

Yes, the BB is the iPad BB. Regarding reflashing the BB, should I use Redsn0w 0.9.9b4 instead of UltrasnOw?

    Thannks

    •
      Pramod4 years, 11 months ago

Are you currently on the iPad BB / not? Please be more clear. You need not reflash if your already on it, but I doubt that.

I tried to upgrade to iSO 5 directly from iTunnes without selecting the IPSW with shift , and i got the error 3192 and then after that i tried to select the IPSW that i had downloaded from here and i got the error 3002, what is wrong ? best regards

The Apple servers are being swamped with the iOS 5 update requests. You need to wait out for sometime until you can retry.

  •
    Anjum4 years, 11 months ago

okay so here’s the question… again back to the blobs problem… how can anyone upgrade to ios5 as no one would have the reqd blobs for it…. or was the problem specifically for my case? hope you remember my case..

    •
      Pramod4 years, 11 months ago

Its because Apple officially signs / allows them to be restored w/o the need for saving them in the first place. Its the latest one out there as of today for which you don’t need them saved.

AS I use Gevey SIM as well I think I may just need to wait until the Windows version of it to come up in order to preserve the baseband :( Sn0wbreeze one’ Cydia crashes when I was trying add a new source :(

    •
      Pramod4 years, 11 months ago

Mhm. That’s weird. Sn0wbreeze works sweet.

    •
      Pramod4 years, 11 months ago

You need to boot tethered always using the Just boot Tethered Now option from Redsn0w each time you reboot / shut down your device to boot it back up. Try the same & everything should look great.

    Hi Pramod,

    Please, i need your help.

I have a iP3GS running the 4.3.3. with iPad BB jailbroken and unlocked. Last night I upgrade to iOS 5 and ran ultrasnow, everything whent smoothly. For my sorprise after rebooting the iPhone sent me to a screen to “activate the iPhone”. Well, I wes unable to activated. I was using ATT in the past and after unlocking it, I switched to T-Mobile.

One of the Messages that I get on the screen is that the “ICCID is Unknown.” What does this mean? The message shows the IMEI number but not the ICCID.

Thanks in advance Pramod for your help.

      Pramod4 years, 11 months ago

Check your BB first. Its not on an Ultrasn0w unlockable BB version right? You need to now reflash your BB with the iPad BB again to get back your unlock & ultrasn0w isn’t compatible yet on the iOS 5.

I have an iPhone 3GS with old bootroom, it is factory unlocked. Now it is 4.3.3 and jailbroken. So, do I need to update to iOS 5 simply using iTunes and clicking update, or I need to download IPSW from your links and update using “shift” button? And what about untethered, I need to do something differently or everything in jailbreak process is the same, just it will be untethered?

    •
      Pramod4 years, 11 months ago

In either way you install, ultimately you will be ending up with the same IPSW file for the iOS 5 install.
For you, iOS 5 will be an untethered JB. So blindly update to iOS 5 & use Redsn0w0.9.9b5 for your JB.

  •
    Jimmy4 years, 11 months ago

I thought it is “Redsn0w 0.9.9b5”? You may want to correct that ;)

    •
      Pramod4 years, 11 months ago

You can use 0.9.9b4 as well by pointing Redsn0w manually to the final iOS 5 version. The GM & the final versions are one & the same in terms of SHA-1 hashes as well.
