Earlier this month, the world has been treated to yet another iteration of Apple's highly successful smartphone, the iPhone 4S. Though its announcement was met with overwhelming disappointment from the denizens of the Internet due to not being a redesigned iPhone, it has still managed to be very successful by breaking sales records. When Apple highlighted the features of the iPhone 4S, one improvement that they've cited is the improved battery life. But now that the iPhone 4S is now out, there seems to be various complaints about the device's degraded battery life.
According to a newly published report from UK's The Guardian, an alarming number of customers are complaining about the iPhone 4S's seemingly short battery life, at least when compared to the iPhone 4. The source of the problem is currently unknown which is why this prompted Apple engineers to contact customers directly and ask them to install a monitoring program into their devices so the engineers can pinpoint the source of the problem. One customer who was contacted by the Apple engineers relates to The Guardian:
My battery life was extremely poor - 10% drop in standby every hour. I noticed that the usage figure was roughly half that of standby, even when the phone was not being used, so I assumed something was crashing or running in the background. I switched off all the new features including Siri and location services, but it was still really poor. I also tried setting up a clean phone with no apps but it is still really poor.
The customer said that Apple acknowledged that this was indeed an existing issue with the iPhone 4S and that they are far from finding the fix.
I then got a call from a senior [Apple] engineer who said he had read my post and was 'reaching out' to users for data and admitted this was an issue (and that they aren't close to finding a fix!) and asked lots of questions about my usage and then asked if he could install the file below and that he would call back the day after to retrieve the info. I extracted the file from my Mac after a sync and emailed it to him. He was incredibly helpful and apologetic in the typical Apple way!
Earlier this month when the data sheet was released for the iPhone 4S, Apple noted that the standby time for the iPhone 4S's battery life would be 200 hours which is actually lower than that of the iPhone 4 and even that of the original iPhone. Apple did not give any reasons as to why it was lower they noted that other lifespans such as 3G talktime is actually better with the 4S.
Many users find this particular problem with the iPhone 4S's battery life to be surprising. Although it has a superior dual-core processor A5 chip, the iPhone 4S's battery has 5.3 watt-hours' capacity. A 0.05Wh upgrade than the iPhone 4. In some cases, the problem lies with corrupted contacts that was imported from iCloud services or from Google Contacts list but it can be solved by simply deleting and reinstalling the application.
