At around the end of June this year, search engine giant Google launched Google+, the company's latest attempt to be relevant to the social networking industry. Google+ was initially launched as a closed beta and the only way you can sign-up for an account is through invitations. But just a few days ago, Google has finally opened Google+ to the public, which means anyone can sign-up for an account now without the need for invitations. Along with Google+ going live, the official app for Android was upgraded as well with 100+ new features including the addition of the platform's very own group video chat service, Hangouts.
And now a few days after, Google has updated the Google+ app for the iOS as well. And pretty much like in the Android version of the app, this particular update for the iOS is a big one as well. The main selling point of this improved Google+ app is the inclusion of Hangouts. Now you will be able to invite up to 9 of your friends to a video chat conference on your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Definitely a deal clincher if you are someone who enjoys a good group video chat feature.
Aside from that, if anyone can remember Google+'s text messaging feature called Huddle has been now been renamed rather generically to Messenger. The Google+ development team has made some reliability and performance improvements for Messenger. And now for the first time ever, you are now able to share pictures in the Google+ app using Messenger.
Apart what has been mentioned above, several improvements have been made as well in order to make sure that the Google+ works great on iOS devices. Below is the full change log of Google+ app for iOS:
- Join Hangouts from the mobile app
- Huddle is now Messenger
- Send photos in Messenger
- +1 on comments
- Reliability improvements in Messenger
- Granular push notification settings
- Map view in profile for places you’ve lived
- Improved +mention support
- Share a post with individuals
- Improved public search for people
- Various bug and performance improvements
So if you are someone who have been actively using Google+ in your iOS devices, be sure that you update the app through iTunes or by downloading it through the link we have provided below. For those who haven't tried it yet, then perhaps the app could make you a Google+ believer.
When Google+ came out, the platform enjoyed a favorable response from users. In more or less two weeks, registered users ballooned to 10 million which is pretty impressive considering it was still in beta back then. But now it seems that the initial interest for Google+ is slowly decreasing, there have been some decline in usage and traffic and the amount of public posts have dwindled as well. But as we have mentioned before, it's still quite early to tell since Google+ just got out of beta recently. We'll see if it becomes worthy enough to compete with leading social networks such as Twitter and Facebook.
