A few days ago, the jailbreaking scene was treated to a rather surprising news when jailbreak superstar Comex announced that he was hired as an intern by the company he loves to hack, Apple. If you are familiar with the jailbreak scene then you should be also familiar with Comex or you should have at least used his popular jailbreak tool, JailbreakMe. Now that he is now working for Apple, many are wondering what's going to happen to his career / hobby as a jailbreak developer? Well Comex personally answers some of the burning questions that jailbreak fans have.
Yesterday at Reddit, the famed jailbreak developer held a Q&A session for those who are wondering what happens now that Comex has crossed over to the other side. During the Q&A, Comex made it clear that he won't be developing any more jailbreak tools and instead he will be helping the company in finding exploits in the iOS.
There are a lot of smart people working for Apple already; maybe I can help, but I doubt I can stop people from finding exploits.
So what happens to his popular jailbreaking tool, JailbreakMe? While Comex did say that he won't have anything to do with the jailbreak scene anymore, he did promise that he won't be making any modification or take down the JailbreakMe tool. Instead, he will be passing it on to other jailbreak developers like chpwn or MuscleNerd.
No, I'll hand them over to MuscleNerd or chpwn or whoever will take care of them.
A host of other questions were asked by the jailbreak community for the famed jailbreak developer which covered quite an extensive range of topics. From just how much money did he make from the jailbreaking scene,
I've made a good amount of money through donations, which is mostly being used to help pay for college. JailbreakMe 2.0 was like $40,000; 3.0 was $15,000 (not quite sure why it decreased).
or if he does have any plan to have a regular position at Apple if given the chance.
I don't know if I'd want to do that- I've never had a job before and I don't know what it's like- and I intend to go back to college soon.
While Comex indeed made it clear that he won't be developing jailbreak tools any more, he's still hoping that someone will pick up the slack and find the vulnerabilities in the iOS so that he could jailbreak his iPhone.
But I'll want to jailbreak my phone, so I hope someone finds them [vulnerabilities] :p
To read the complete Q&A session for Comex, just refer to this Reddit link.
JailbreakMe 3.0 is the latest version of Comex's jailbreaking tool. It is one of the easiest, if not the easiest method of jailbreaking your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch although you need to under iOS 4.3.3 in order to work. There is no doubt that this decision of Comex to work for Apple will affect the jailbreak community. Now that Comex is on board with Apple, it could be possible that jailbreak exploits will be easily patched from now on that it could slow down the jailbreak process entirely. Either way, there are still many talented jailbreak developers out there that could continue Comex's work or provide their own jailbreak solutions.
