Calling the iPhone a mere phone would be pretty much the understatement of the century as we all know that the device is capable of so many things outside of being well, a phone. One of the best things about the iPhone is its camera. Despite being a camera in a smartphone, it is one of the most widely used camera in the world. The iPhone camera, with its ultra bright LED flash can also be used as a great light source. Don't tell me you haven't used your iPhone when looking for lost items in the dark?
Unfortunately, using the iPhone's LED flash as a light source requires you to dig deep with the System Settings before you can activate it. A process which can become cumbersome each time when all you want is to use the iPhone's flashlight. Well today, we have a jailbreak tweak for you that will remove all the tedium associated with activating your iPhone's LED flash and using it as a flashlight.
The tweak that we are referring to is called FlashCam which is available through Cydia under the BigBoss Repo. Once you have installed FlashCam, you will see two new buttons in your device's lockscreen. One button will activate the iPhone's flashlight instantly when tapped and the other button is launching the a camera application. What's neat is about this tweak is that you can actually assign which camera app will be launched once the "Take Photo" (second button) is tapped. This means that you don't have to settle with the default Camera app which is limited in features. You can assign your favorite camera applications such as Camera+ or Instagram.
In order to customize FlashCam, you simply navigate to the iPhone's system settings where you will be given numerous options to configure. In FlashCam's settings you will be able to configure options such as enabling / disabling FlashCam, Camera Mode, which Camera app to launch, setting a passcode, Dock Position and so on.
If you are familiar with Apple's upcoming mobile operating system, the iOS 5, then you'd know that having quick access to the iPhone's camera is actually one of the new features. Although in the case of iOS 5, it will only support the default Camera app so FlashCam still has the upper hand when it comes to that aspect. And of course, iOS 5 is going to be released this coming fall, so if you can't wait for it, then this tweak should be a great solution for the meantime. Aside from quick access to your camera applications, you also get to conveniently activate your device's flashlight. And best of all, FlashCam can be yours for FREE.
As with all jailbreak tweaks, before you can hope to use FlashCam, you need to have a jailbroken iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. If somehow your iDevice is not jailbroken yet and want to start now, then just refer to these easy to follow guides. If you are under the latest firmware iOS 4.3.5, then check out our Redsn0w guide.
