To say that iOS gaming has gained a lot of traction ever since its conception would be an understatement of the century. With over 400,000 active apps, a significant number of those are games (many are constant chart toppers), anyone who would claim that the iOS is still irrelevant to the gaming scene will surely have a hard time backing it up. With that said, once in a while we encounter some pretty cool gadgets and accessories that are meant to enhance the gaming experience in your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. We are presenting to you the appBlaster.
Any gamer of the 80's should be able to remember the light gun accessory for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), the Zapper, which is used for the game Duck Hunt among all others. If you do, then that accessory should remind you of the appBlaster, except that it looks more like a souped-up version. So if you've been gaming since the 80's maybe this accessory could bring out the kid in you.
Anyway, appBlaster utilizes augmented reality in order to create an immersive first person shooter experience. With the iPhone's built-in accelerometer, aiming and reloading is as simple as tilting the accessory in the air. Here's video that should give you a pretty good idea on how the appBlaster works:
And according to the product's official page:
If you are the proud owner of a shiny iPhone3GS or iPhone4 you can make use of the rear facing camera to overlay the game against your surrounding environment. When your iPhone is docked it transforms into a high tech sight complete with cross hair and game data. Now the alien swarm will appear from the walls, ceiling, floor, dog or whatever else happens to be in the room at the time. Don’t worry if you have an iPod Touch as the game works just as well using the alternative space background.
The gun is lightweight and the shoulder stock can be removed to give you a shorter gun depending on your preference. There are two triggers; the rear trigger fires the lasers, whilst the front trigger is for firing missiles, but use them sparingly!
The appBlaster accessory works perfect with the game apptoyz Alien Attack which is available for free in iTunes App Store. The accessory itself will cost you about £19.99 which is almost $30.
appBlaster works great at what it promises to do although we think that the price is a little too steep. We just don't see many people dishing out $30 for a plastic gun accessory. And probably one of its significant drawbacks is that it is only compatible with a single game, which certainly can't justify buying a whole new accessory for. Fortunately, according to manufacturer AppToyz there are more title in the works:
Don’t be fooled in thinking this is a one hit wonder, there are already more games in development and we’re sure that once other developers have had a go they’ll all be using this ingenious device to get the most out of their games.
But still it is a pretty sweet accessory that could be a very cool toy gift for kids and kids at heart alike. It is also a good thing that batteries are not needed to power this accessory. Buy appBlaster by AppToyz here.Contact Us for News Tips, Corrections and Feedback
