According to a report by DailyTech, they have an ex-Apple employee source that provided them with some interesting info about Apple next big hardware launch. No, we are not referring to the company's inevitable follow-up to the iPhone 4. This one is rather surprising, yet it was touted by the ex-Apple employee informant to be the "company's biggest upcoming product launch". It wasn't made official yet, but if the information is accurate, Apple will be entering the TV display business.
Though the Apple TV2 has done marginally better than the first one, its sales isn't exactly making a splash, especially when compared to Apple's other hardware offerings. In the past, it was labeled by Apple to be just a "hobby." Some analysts even critiqued it as "Apple's only major market failure". But according to this latest information, it looks like Apple is kicking it into high gear with regards to living room entertainment by producing Apple branded displays. According to TechCrunch's informant:
Apple plans to "blow Netflix and all those other guys away" by bundling Apple TV + iTunes inside physical television sets. According to the source Apple is teaming up with a major supplier (our guess would be Samsung Electronics), to provide the physical televisions, which will be rebranded as Apple television sets.
You'll go into an Apple retail store and be able to walk out with a TV. It's perfect.
So this is basically an Apple branded display with a built-in Apple TV. These TV sets are said to be powered by the iOS 5, and as one of the current leader in the display industry, its parts will most likely be supplied by Samsung. If this is true, then the Apple TV line of products will most likely be dropped and replaced by actual TV sets.
There have been many rumors and speculations that are floating around regarding an Apple branded TV set and that it is being worked on at the Cupertino HQ. But nothing substantial was uncovered and it was branded as "just a rumor." So even if this might just be another rumor, this is the first time that someone from (or used to be) inside Apple has actually given past TV display rumors any weight.
From the looks and sound of it, this is quite similar to Sony's Google powered TV which utilizes the company's Google TV version from the Android OS. And as of now, sales of Google TVs have been quite disappointing. If the information provided is indeed true, what makes Apple think that their product won't suffer the same fate? Well, one has to consider of course just how strong Apple's brand is. Apple have a very strong following and they can be very devoted. So it is highly possible that Apple can pull off this one.
According to the source, the earliest possible launch date of Apple branded TVs is most likely this coming fall. Although given Apple's knack for products of high standards, they could launch it as late as 2012. Interestingly, this fall will also be the official release of iOS 5 and allegedly, of the next iPhone.
