Downgrade iOS 4.3 to iOS 4.2.1/4.1/4.0/3.1.3/3.1.2 [How-To Guide]

Here is a step-by-step guide which can help you to downgrade your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad firmware from iOS 4.3 final to iOS 4.2.1/4.1/4.0.1/4.0.2/4.0. Same guide is valid to downgrade your iDevice from iOS 4.3 to iPhone OS 3.1.3/3.1.2. As iOS 4.3 is not available for iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G, so all iDevices will be needing SHSH blobs saved for the iOS to which they want to downgrade.

Downgrade iPhone Firmware

Prerequisites

  1. Download iTunes 10.2.1 from here
  2. Download iH8sn0w's iREB RC4 tool from here. This will help you to avoid 1600, 1601, 1602, 1603, 1604 and 1015 error. If you are on Mac, use this instead of iREB.
  3. Download stock or custom IPSW of the firmware to which you want to downgrade
  4. Download iOS 4.2.1 for iPhone 4/3GS/3G, iPod Touch 4G/3G/2G & iPad
Download iOS 4.1 for iPhone 4/3GS/3G & iPod Touch 4G/3G/2G
Download iOS 4.0 for iPhone 4/3GS/3G & iPod Touch 2G/3G
Download iPhone OS 3.1.3 for iPhone 3GS/3G/2G
Download iPhone OS 3.1.2 for iPhone 3GS/3G/2G

  5. Download TinyUmbrella for Windows or Mac from here

Step to Downgrade iOS 4.3 Final to iOS 4.2.1/4.1/4.0/3.1.3/3.1.2:

  1. Connect your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad to your PC or Mac via USB cable.
  2. Launch TinyUmbrella app and wait while it detects your iDevice.
  3. Once TinyUmbrella has detected your iDevice, select it from the side-panel and hit the Save SHSH button. TinyUmbrella will download all of your saved SHSHs from Cydia and will save them to your hard-drive
  4. Once saved, switch to the LOG tab and click on Start TSS Server button. Make sure iTunes is closed at this time.
  5. TinyUmbrella Save SHSH

  6. Clicking on Save SHSH button will download all of your SHSH blob files from Cydia to your computer's hard drive. Once done, launch iREB and click on the name of your iDevice. Let TinyUmbrella to run in background.
  7. iREB for iOS 3.x to 4.x

  8. Put your iDevice into DFU mode using the instructions below:
    • Turn off your iPhone completely
    • Press and hold the Home+Power button simultaneously for 10 seconds.
    • After 10 seconds, release the Power button but keep holding the Home button until iREB detects your iDevice in DFU mode.

iREB for iOS 3.x to 4.x

  9. Wait while iREB uses Limera1n to exploit your iDevice.
  10. iREB for iOS 3.x to 4.x

  11. Once your iDevice is in PWNED DFU mode, iREB will show the confirmation message. Click OK to close the window and head-over to TinyUmbrella window.
  12. Click on the Start TSS Server button and switch to the LOG tab. If you see the following two lines at the end of your LOG, it means TSS server has started successfully.
  13. TSS Server Started!

    TSS Accepting connections...

    TinyUmbrella TSS Server

  14. Open iTunes 10.2.1
  15. Click on your device name from the side-panel to view the summary page.
  16. iPhone Name in iTunes

  17. You will see two buttons on the summary-panel i-e Check for Update and Restore. Hold down the SHIFT key (ALT key for Mac) and click on the Restore button.
  18. Select the firmware file you downloaded in 3 and click Open to start the restore process.
  19. iOS 4.2.1 iTunes Restore

  20. Thats it. Wait while iTunes restores the firmware on your iDevice. Once done, your iDevice will restart automatically.

Stuck in Recovery Mode After Downgrade?

If your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad is stuck in recovery mode after downgrade, you can try the following tools to kick your iDevice out of recovery mode loop.

  • If downgrading to iPhone OS 3.1.3/3.1.2, use RecBoot [Windows | Mac]
  • If downgrading to iOS 4.1/4.0, use TinyUmbrella. Follow instructions here.
  • If stuck in iOS 4.2.1 recovery mode loop, use special version of TinyUmbrella i-e TinyUmbrella (Fix Recovery) [Windows | Mac]

Tip1: After step 9, open your default browser and type http://gs.apple.com/, it should redirect to Cydia home.
Tip2: If you do not want to use TinyUmbrella, simply add the following line to your Windows or Mac HOSTS file.

74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com

Thanks for your reply. I solved my problem anyway and my iphone is ok no (I hope it will be for a long time :-) ). I don’t know why I was able only to get iphone in dfu and not in recovery, but I had ssh saved on cydia because I had seen them on Cydia page when iphone was working. I resolved my problem (error 1600) only getting my iphone in recovery mode after about three days of tests.
    Thanks anyway! :-)

iOS 4.3.5 / any other iOS version for which you may have an SHSH saved already via Cydia / TU.

Hi! My iphone is stuck in DFU (I think) and I can’t restore it :( I get error 1601 from itunes. Can you help me please? :(

    •
      Pramod4 years, 11 months ago

Stuck in DFU means that you never really had any valid SHSH saved for your device & yet you tried to restore your device to that particular iOS. This will always result in DFU loops. Read this http://bit.ly/oKCpYX to better understand.

Ahh……i’ve got (1601) error which is not good, when i was at the final step in downgrading the firmware and it says quote, “The “iphone” could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1601)” so could any please help me?!?! pretty plz?

Well, i have been using Ultra VNC not sure on the version, which do you advise for a XP running sp4 home edition its a junk laptop though shitty ass proccesor and graphics and basically crap, but iDemo where is that located in cydia never seen it in there before..

    •
      Pramod5 years, 1 month ago

Display Recorder is what you need to install on your iDevice & iDemo is a separate s/w that you need to install on your machine. You will find more info about it on the internet.

So i read Veency works on all ISO well i have 4.2.1 and a ipod 2g and all i get is a black screen, i tried some things i found like a repo with Veency (FIXED) and it just put’s my itouch into safemode when i click anything, i have tried the normal Veency from Networking and i get a black screen, neither work, am i just doing something wrong here?
And the cursor shows up, but nothing on the screen, has there ever been a actual fix for this problem yet?
Really would be thankful for your help.

    •
      Pramod5 years, 1 month ago

Use the original version of Veency (without any additional repos) & use a supporting desktop VNC client for your machine to connect to it.
You might want to try iDemo instead which is way better (in terms of rendering & almost no lags).

And sorry, i didnt noe about the SHSH blobs be4 updating. Im new to jailbreaking and downgrading. i guess my only way is to wait 4 an un-tethered JB.

    :(

  •
    Abhiram5 years, 1 month ago

No, i didnt save the SHSH blob 4 the 4.2.1 but actually that tym i jailbroke it with GreenPois0n. I dont noe y i felt lyk upadting to 4.3.5, but cuz itz tethered, now i wanna downgrade. I dont have a WIFI connection, so installing cydia ws done by redsn0w and installous and other stuff were .deb
Will there be any un-tethered jailbreak 4 ios 4.3.5??

    •
      Pramod5 years, 1 month ago

No. You will have to wait for the iOS 5 untethered to come out. Now don’t ask me when it will. It will come out when its ready.
Also, get yourself onto a Wi-FI & run Cydia to see which iOS versions do you actually have listed here http://bit.ly/p07pX2. If your lucky, you can downgrade to those versions ONLY.

  •
    Abhiram5 years, 1 month ago

I did exactly as the tutorial said, but the DFU mode keeps popping up, ‘n’ i guess i don hav enough patience to wait 4 another Untethered jailbreak 4 4.3.5 :p

i wann go back to GreenPois0n…. so plz help!

Do you have an SHSH blob saved for your device on iOS 4.2.1? Well if your iPT was never jailbroken anytime before, there’s no way to get back to an earlier version of the iOS.

Yes, you can downgrade back to iOS 3.1.3, but Veency does support all versions upto iOS 4.3.3 atleast.

My phone is stuck in the DFU loop or whatever state (black screen) i restart and nothing i plug it my charger and still nothing. It keeps saying error on itunes 3901 and sometimes 1601 i reinstalled i tunes and everything. i think my phones fried.

    i have a iphone 4 4.10 firmware. and 4.3.1 the other one

    •
      Wolverine5 years, 4 months ago

Lol. Your iPhone is perfectly normal and is not fried. Just put in in Pwned DFU mode to avoid all 16xx errors. To put your iPhone into Pwned DFU mode from DFU mode, follow this guide http://bit.ly/mKemL0 Once done, restore iOS 4.3.3 custom IPSW (NOT iOS 4.3.1 custom IPSW otherwise you will get error 3194)

You need to upgrade your baseband to iPad baseband using Redsn0w http://bit.ly/gI22Px but for that you must be running iOS 4.1 or iOS 4.2.1.

You probably mean you want to unlock your iPhone 3GS with baseband 05.16.02? Right? To unlock iPhone 3GS baseband 05.16.02, you MUST upgrade it to iPad baseband using Redsn0w tool. You need to tell me the the firmware version to which you recently downgraded?

          •
            Wolverine5 years, 4 months ago

Unlock means you can use any SIM card to make calls etc while locked iPhone means you can only use SIM cards of official carrier like AT&T. If you want to jailbreak iOS 4.0 on your iPhone 3GS, you can use Limera1 tool http://bit.ly/ci5E8n Jailbreaking comes first and then unlocking comes 2nd.

it’s a iphone 3gs with 05.16.02-6.4_M3S2 (got it from tinyumbrella)IPSW? not sure what u mean but i tried to downgrade to 4.0 if that is what you meant

        •
          Alexander5 years, 4 months ago

by the way i forgot to say that it stands no sim card installed, does that mean i got to jailbrake it? or? because the sim card i tried didn’t work. srry for bad english and stuff

          •
            Wolverine5 years, 4 months ago

This means you have restored the firmware successfully. Do you rely on an unlock? If yes then you need to hacktivate your iPhone first to access Cydia. If you do not rely on an unlock, just put your carrier SIM card and activate using iTunes.

        •
          Wolverine5 years, 4 months ago

iOS 4.0 has no recovery loop issues. Also you don’t have iPad baseband, so you can restore the stock IPSW as well. I think your iPhone failed to restore the firmware completely. Just restore your iPhone again but make sure the file you are restoring is iPhone2,1_4.0_8A293_Restore.ipsw

Hi i have an ipod 2g and i’ve followed those things step by step and i am getting error 1016. What i’ve got to do? I remind you that i have the 4.2.1 version and i want to downgrade to 4.0.1. Thank you.!

    •
      Wolverine5 years, 5 months ago

Error 1015 and 1016 can be fixed by using Recboot 2.2. Just connect your iPod to your PC or Mac and launch Recboot software. Click on Exit Recovery button and it’ll kick your iPhone out of recovery mode loop. If for some reason, RecBoot do not work, the only way to bypass iTunes error 1016 is by restoring iOS 4.0.1 custom IPSW.

If for some reason Recboot is not working, use TinyUmbrella http://bit.ly/bWtu6v

      •
        adrian5 years, 5 months ago

TinyUmbrella dosnt work aswell doesnt show my iphone on the left side bar where it should be displayed but in the Log tab when i connected or disconnect it comes up saying “DFU device connected” and also tried “Fix Recovery” and nothing works?

        •
          Wolverine5 years, 5 months ago

When you used RecBoot, you have to place your device in recovery mode. You are connecting your iPhone in DFU mode which is not recognized by Recboot. To put your iPhone into recovery, press Home+Power buttons until your iDevice kicks itself out of DFU.

Your system registry is corrupt or it is infected with some kind of malware. This error is not related to iTunes, it is Windows error with corrupt system files. Either arrange some other PC or scan your system with some good antivirus software.

Hi I followed the guide above to downgrade the ipad that has IOS 4.3, after that if occurs an error 1015. So I used fixrecovery 421. It failed to exit from recovery and only displays greenpoison initialized.

So I use tinyumbrella to exit recovery and it display the same greenpoison initialized on the ipad. But the strange thing is that tiny umbrella still display the version of ipad firmware is 4.3 and not 4.2.1

I did use greenpoison rc6.1 and tried to get out of the greenpoison initialized error but no successful also.

    Need some help here…

    Dear sir,

i bought iphone with 4.2.1 and factory unlocked. now i have upgraded it to iOS 4.3 .

Now i want to downgrade it to iOS 4.0. can you please tell in brief how to do it as i don’t have cydia and shsh blobs ( actually even i dont know what is these shshs blobs).

thanks in advance for your reply. :)

    •
      Wolverine5 years, 6 months ago

Downgrading back to iOS 4.2.1 from iOS 4.3 is impossible if you don’t have SHSH blobs saved for iOS 4.2.1.

      •
        Jhey5 years, 6 months ago

Yeah, you must have read first before upgrading, because upgrading will lock your iPhone, and if you don’t have any SHSH blobs saved, then its impossible to downgrade just like what Mr. Wolverine said.

      •
jatinder singh5 years, 6 months ago

you mean.. i f*kced my iphone ??? i hope there is other way to downgrade iOS who don’t have cydia or jailbroken devices before..

and if i can use any other person’s iphone 4.2.1 blobs????

        •
          Wolverine5 years, 6 months ago

The best thing about SHSH blobs is that you don’t even need a jailbroken iDevice for that. All you have to do is to connect your iDevice to your PC or Mac and run TinyUmbrella. Now you do not have iOS 4.2.1 SHSH blobs, you can never downgrade back to it. Its a check from Apple. Apple do not want its customers to keep the older firmwares. So guy name Saurik developed a way which saves your SHSH blobs and can be used to downgrade the firmware. The only check is that you have to save your SHSH blobs earlier before a new firmware is released. I always remind my FB fans to save their SHSH blobs before new firmware is released. From any other source can i get shsh blobs for 4.0 iOS??? as my device came with 4.2.1 and i wanted it to downgrade it to 4.0 as battery life is very good in that firmware.

          •
            Wolverine5 years, 6 months ago

You can not get SHSH blobs of iOS 4.2.1 from anywhere. There is no way to downgrade your iPhone back to iOS 4.2.1 or 4.0 if you have no SHSHs saved.

  •
    Jhey5 years, 6 months ago

Mr. Wolverine, how can i know if my blobs were saved or not?

    •
      Wolverine5 years, 6 months ago

Download TinyUmbrella and hit the Save SHSH button. It will tell you if you have saved any SHSHs for your iDevice of not.

      •
        Jhey5 years, 6 months ago

i have 4.2.1 shsh blob, so can i downgrade? and can i downgrade from a jailbroken iOS 4.3 to 4.2.1?

        •
          Wolverine5 years, 6 months ago

Of course you can downgrade. All you need is SHSH blobs. If TinyUmbrella is showing your SHSH blobs, use the above procedure to downgrade. Do NOT miss any step.

          •
            Jhey5 years, 6 months ago

i didnt miss out any of the steps but when i tried to downgrade, there was an error in itunes, error 1015

          •
            Wolverine5 years, 6 months ago

Don’t worry, this is normal. Just download Recboot from here and click on Exit Recovery button. If that dosen’t help, put your iPhone in DFU mode and press the Fix Recovery button on TinyUmbrella. If TinyUmbrella also fails then download this zip and run fixrecovery421.exe

PS: Your iPhone firmware has been successfully restored. All you need is to kick if out of recovery using the above methods i told you.

          •
            Jhey5 years, 6 months ago

i thought that error made my downgrading failed, i just restore back again to iOS 4.3 stock, after that? can i proceed directly to downgrade? without jailbreaking iOS 4.3?

          •
            Wolverine5 years, 6 months ago

Yes you can proceed at anytime but note that downgrading firmware do not mean it will also downgrade your baseband.

          •
            Jhey5 years, 6 months ago

i successfully downgraded now, i tried to recboot to exit recovery mode (failed) fix recovery of tinyumbrella (failed) fixrecovery421 (success)

          btw, i used GreenPois0n RC6 to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1

Yes that is because GreenPois0n do not hacktivate. To hacktivate, you must run Redsn0w over it. Use this guide for that. Make sure to check only Cydia when options are displayed.

Do not worry. Did you managed to get back to iPhone OS 3.1.2? If yes then use Blackra1n to hacktivate (bypass that emergency screen) and jailbreak your iPhone. If you need more urgent rely to your questions, ask me on our Facebook fan page.

Once u updated to 4.3, you can’t go back to 3.1.2! It is impossible! And u can’t unlock it at this moment

One can go back to iPhone OS 3.1.2 if SHSH blobs are saved. Unlocking is not possible at this moment.

Yes you can downgrade to iOS 4.0 using the above procedure, provided that you have saved iOS 4.0 SHSH blobs.

        thankz for yr reply.
i thought that all ios 4.1 could b downgraded
my phone originally came with ios4.1 then it couldn’t b downgraded.
        i have one more question
        i m using at&t prepaid sim card.
do u think that it will work with locked iphone?

        •

If the iPhone is locked to AT&T, it should work. If your iPhone is locked to any other carrier like Vodafone etc, AT&T SIM wont work.

Just wanted to mention an alternate way I found (no PCs involved) after trying many many many times and failing—

Instead of using iREB which doesn’t yet have a mac version, you can instead use a version of Redsn0w (any should pretty much work fine, i used r8), select an OLDER SUPPORTED firmware that isn’t 4.3 (it doesn’t actually matter, but for some reason redsn0w doesn’t let you skip this step– then select “just enter pwned DFU mode right now” once you get confirmation, the rest of the steps are the same as in the tutorial–

Dude, i just verified your Redsn0w tip. It really works. I must say you are simply awesome :)
