Minimize Windows Live Messenger to System Tray in Windows 7

Sometimes it's quite annoying to see Windows Live Messenger covering so much space in our Windows 7 taskbar. Unfortunately there is no option available in Windows Live Messenger settings which would allow you to minimize WLM in your system tray or notification area, however there is a workaround which allows you to minimize Windows Live Messenger to Windows 7 notification area.

Minimize Windows Live Messenger to System Tray in Windows 7:

  1. Click on the 'Start Menu' and type 'Windows Live Messenger' to filter out WLM from the installed programs. Right-click on the WLM link and choose 'Properties' as shown in the screenshot below:
  2. Windows Live Messenger

  3. In 'Properties' window, click on the 'Compatibility' tab and choose 'Windows Vista (Service Pack 2)' as the compatibility mode for Windows Live Messenger.
  4. Windows Live Messenger Properties

  5. Click OK and restart Windows Live Messenger. From now on, whenever you will click on the minimize button, WLM will be minimized to Windows 7 notification area. Cheers!
