Guide to Root Android 2.2.1 (FRG83) on Google Nexus One without Unlocking Bootloader

CLShortFuse at xda-developers managed to create another 1-click root for Android 2.2.1 (FRG83) on Nexus One. Previously rooting on Android 2.2 (FRF91) was possible with Universal Androot which is a 1-click root app for Nexus One, HTC Hero, HTC Magic, Motorola Milestone, Motorola Droid, Dell Streak and many other Android phones.

Steps to Root Android 2.2.1 (FRG83) on Google Nexus One

  1. First of all you need to setup ADB and install Android USB drivers on Windows.
  2. Inorder to setup ADB, download Android SDK from here and JDK 6 from here.
  3. Install JDK 6 you downloaded in previous step.
  4. Extract android-sdk_r07-windows.zip in (C:) drive such that android-sdk-windows directory in (C:) drive contains SDK Manager.exe.
  5. Launch SDK Manager.exe, navigate to Available Packages, select USB Driver Package and click on Install Selected button.
  6. Navigate to My Computer (Icon)->Properties (Link)->Advanced System Settings (Link)->Advanced (Tab)-> Environment Variables (Button)->System variables (Section)->Path (Variable)-> Edit (Button)-> Variable value. Enter the following value as shown in the screenshot.
  7. C:\android-sdk-windows\tools

Found the solution for ‘getting mount path’ problem.
Turn off your Nexus one but leave it with usb plugged in.
Open Rage against the cage program – click GO
    Turn on your N1.
    wait.

turning off does not work. it won’t detect your phone.

it’s the memory card. remove the memory card, and try again.

      worked for me.

    Hey…
I rooted my device finally… now how to install cyanogen mod in this…am still have 4 options
DONT HAVE CHOOSE FROM SD CARD
    Reboot system now
    apply sdcard:update.zip
    wipe data\factory reset
    wipe cache partition
Dont have any option apart from this.

    •
      Wolverine4 years, 2 months ago

Options depend upon what kind of “Recovery” image you are using. As the above one is stock recovery, so you can choose apply sdcard:update.zip and for that you must have a file named “update.zip” in your SD card. If you have Amon_Ra’s Recovery, you can choose from ZIP files in your SD card.

Hey… Am using nexus one…my build was FRF91 before. I Got OTA update 2.2.1 when i updated it, am not able to install custom rom on my nexus one and also am not able to get in to Hboot. Please Please Suggest… I did all the above procedure. Please kindly help!

      •
        Wolverine4 years, 2 months ago

Upgrading to Android 2.2.1 OTA will unroot your device of course. Use the above procedure to root your Nexus One. I am not sure why you are unable to access HBOOT. adb reboot bootloader in ADB might help you.

I am stuck at “getting mount path”!
    Whats wrong?

    •
      Wolverine4 years, 2 months ago

Are you sure you have installed ADB fine? Type adb devices in command prompt and see if your device is listed or not?
P.S: I have tested the above procedure and it worked 100% fine.

i’m also stuck at “getting mount path”, i’ve typed in adb devices in the command prompt and a serial number does come up. rage application just freezes when getting mount path comes up…

Same issue; ADB devices list the device.

I had to include “C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools” to the path as well to resolve “The system cannot find the file specified” issue.
