How To Jailbreak iPhone 3GS (Old Bootrom) on iOS 4.0.1 with PwnageTool Bundles
*Find download links at the end of post. This is an unofficial release. So please avoid it if you are new to jailbreaking and unlocking. However i have tested the procedure below myself and its working fine.
- *Download iOS 4.0.1 for iPhone 3GS
- *Download iTunes 9.2.1
- *Download PwnageTool
- *Download PwnageTool Bundles
- Create a new folder on desktop and put PwnageTool, iOS 4.0.1 IPSW and PwnageTool Bundles in it. Rename folder to JB.
- Now open Terminal and use the following commands to patch PwnageTool.
- After using the above commands, your PwnageTool will be patched and the JB folder will now contain only two files i-e iOS 4.0.1 IPSW and PwnageTool (Patched)
cd /Users/UserName/Desktop/JB
ls -al
mv iPhone2,1_4.0.1_8A306.bundle PwnageTool.app/Contents/Resources/FirmwareBundles/
exit

I just thought I’d point out you do NOT need to hactivate to unlock. All hactivation does is cause issues with push notifications, just put an official SIM in for five seconds and your all active, then unlock and there. No hactivation crap and no push notification issues.
Thankyou! What hactivation do is it enables you to get rid of emergency dial screen and shows you the real SpringBoard so that we can launch Cydia and install Ultrasn0w and unlock our devices. If not hactivated, we need original AT&T SIM to get rid of emergency dial screen!

You can use Redsn0w to jailbreak iOS 4.0.1 on iPhone 3G.

You can also use JailbreakMe 2.0 to jailbreak iOS 4.01 / 4.0.1 on iPhone 3G!
Nope, I can’t. I need PwnageTool for custom packages capability. At the page where you select whether you want Cydia installed, you can have your own packages show up. JailbrakeMe and RedSn0w won’t let me make custom payloads. PwnageTool does. Hence, why I need a bundle for PwnageTool.
